Celebrate Juneteenth❤️💛🖤💚✊🏾
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, celebrates the eradication of slavery in the United States. Specifically, it marks the day, June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, following the arrival of Union troops who announced the Emancipation Proclamation. This event transpired more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued and two months after the Civil War ended.
In June 2021, after decades of dedicated advocacy led by individuals such as Opal Lee, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday when President Joe Biden signed the legislation into law.
Today, Juneteenth is a time to celebrate freedom, honor the strength and contributions of Black Americans, reflect on our nation's history, and reaffirm our commitment to equity, justice, and opportunity for all.
"Freedom is not only a celebration of the past, but a call to build a brighter future."
