Four Tift County Deputies; Major Chad Davis, Deputies James Spradley, Justin Conley & Lt. Lee Gray were recognized Monday night at the Tift County Board of Commissioners meeting for Valor by the Fraternal Order of Police.

Michael Callahan, President of the Georgia State Lodge of the Fraternal Oder of Police presented each Deputy with the President's Award for Valor plaque which read:

Recognized for his heroic action on December 5, 2025, in Tifton where he, with no regard for his own safety, moved over open ground toward a barricaded subject to rescue Tifton Police Detectives Michael Gaskins & Jerry Fulford who had been shot multiple times by a subject armed with an automatic weapon. Their courage under fire saved the lives of Detectives Gaskins & Detective Fulford.

Sheriff Gene Scarbrough commended the Deputies for their life saving efforts.

Also receiving the Award for Valor were Georgia Bureau of Investigation Assistant Special Agent In Charge Marco Jones, GBI Agent Matt Marchant, Tifton Fire Chief Bobby Bennett now retired and serving as the Tifton City Manager along with City Firefighter Tyler Atkinson and Lamar Boyd an Officer with CVE, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement a branch of the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

Last week many of you may have noticed a very small increase in your P.O.A.B. retirement check. Although this is not the increase we were fight for during this past legislative session, it was a small win as we were able to bring this matter to the attention of number of members of the Georgia Assembly. As we proceed into the 2026 election process, the Georgia F.O.P. would like to remind our members to research each candidate before you cast your vote. If they do not truly support public safety with their vote when we really need it, then we cannot support them!

Georgia Fraternal Order of Police donates ballistic vests to the
Schley County Sheriff’s Office:

The Georgia Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) donated Seven (7) Ballistic Vests, and Seven (7) Tourniquets, to the Schley County Sheriff’s Office. These vests, tourniquets, were donated through the Georgia FOP’s “Protect the Protectors Program”, and were presented to Sheriff Nelson of the Schley County Sheriff’s Office on behalf of Georgia FOP President Michael Callahan by Georgia FOP State Vest Committee member Guy Fussell, and Lodge 98 President Michael Zimmermann.

“Operation Protect the Protector” is designed to donate ballistic vests to law enforcement agencies across Georgia, specifically to those smaller agencies that have limited budgets. “Officer Safety is a very important issue to all of us in law enforcement, and the ballistic vests and tourniquets have been proven to save lives and reduce traumatic injuries,” said Fussell. “Every officer should wear a ballistic vest every day. Georgia State FOP is working to ensure that more officers within our state have this extra level of security. “Being able to present these vests and tourniquets to officers that have gone without adequate safety equipment for years is special to me,” Fussell said. In the world we live in now it is extremely important that all law enforcement officers wear protective vests, and the FOP is proud to assist in that effort. Additionally, as of last reporting Nationally 132 Officers have been shot in the line of duty, 55 Officers have been lost in the line of duty, 26 killed by gunfire including 3 in Georgia, Additional there has been 37 officers shot in ambush style attacks this year on Law Enforcement Officers.

The Georgia FOP represents more than 7,900 sworn law enforcement members across the state and is part of the nation’s largest law enforcement organization with more than 377,000 members nationwide. The Georgia Fraternal Order of Police congratulates Community Supervision Officer Traci Whitaker of Department of Community Supervision Lodge # 119 for being chosen as the 2025 Community Supervision Officer of the Year.

Officer Whitaker was recognized in House Resolution 1187 by Representative James Burchett of the 176th and Representative John Corbett of the 174 which states “

She exemplifies the department's core values of: Selfless service, Accountability, Integrity, Teamwork, Professional development.

She routinely goes above and beyond by providing efficient, effective, selfless, and dedicated service to her coworkers and the citizens of Georgia.

Her commitment to public safety and helping individuals under her supervision achieve successful outcomes serves as an example for fellow officers.

It is fitting that her outstanding accomplishments be officially recognized.

The Georgia House of Representatives officially recognizes and commends Community Supervision Officer Traci Whitaker for being named the Department of Community Supervision's 2025 Officer of the Year.

Today Cobb County remembered a young Officer who was killed by a drunk driver. Officer Drew Brown from the Cobb County DUI Task Force was running radar on Highway 41 when I drunk driver ran into the back of his marked patrol car causing it to explode in flames. The FOPA message is we will never forget them.
