Dear Senator Peeler,
This message is on behalf of South Carolina Menstruators, those who have a monthly menstrual cycle and are required to pay sales tax on feminine hygiene products. I am requesting that you place H.B. 3563 on the Finance committee agenda this week. After this bill unanimously passed the House, it landed in your Senate Finance committee on April 6, 2023. Unfortunately, such an important and impactful bill hasn’t advanced to the agenda in nearly a year.
The requested exemption would provide economic relief to those who are required to purchase these products every month. Approximately 56% of our state’s labor force is comprised of females who are paying sales tax on these products. 1 in 4 girls are missing school because they can’t afford these products. This isn’t a political issue; this sales tax exemption is critical for the viability of our state.
Showing up for these young people and our menstruating labor force will support their ability to live in DIGNITY and remain active in contributing to the economic viability of our communities. I am asking you to lead and take immediate action to place H.B. 3563 on the Finance committee agenda.
Thanks in advance for listening to the South Carolina voters and moving quickly to place H.B. 3563 on the Senate Finance Committee agenda.
Your leadership is appreciated!
