Out-of-school-time STEM programs give youth exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math in settings that complement what they experience in the classroom, allowing them to explore concepts in fresh and engaging ways. These programs help youth build curiosity, confidence, and critical thinking skills through hands-on, fun learning experiences. They also connect youth with STEM professionals who serve as role models and bring STEM to life beyond the textbook. ๐Ÿ”ฌโœจ

In our 20 years of operation, SEM Link has delivered out-of-school-time programming that gives youth the chance to engage in hands-on STEM activities, explore STEM careers, and connect with the STEM community. And the benefits go both ways! It also gives STEM professionals who are passionate about outreach a chance to share their expertise with youth outside of their workday.

๐Ÿ“šโœจ This program year, we partnered with Cedar Preschool in Douglasville to bring our STEM Literacy Program to two Pre-K classes, pairing a culturally relevant STEM book each month with an age-appropriate hands-on activity tied to the book. Our final two sessions captured the joy and curiosity at the heart of this work. ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿซง In April, we read The Circle Hunt by Dr. Whitney B. Gaskins, and the kids learned all about circles. Then we headed outside to explore one of the most fun circles of all: bubbles! Each child had their own bottle, and together we blew and counted them. Watching them light up as they realized the bubbles they were chasing were the very shape they had just read about was a reminder of why early STEM exposure matters. โญ•

๐ŸŒŠ In our final session earlier this month, we read Yaya and the Sea, which follows a little girlโ€™s journey to the beach with her mom and aunties. The kids proudly named marine animals they had learned about with their teachers, then we did a hands-on lesson on buoyancy, predicting and testing which items would sink or float in water. Some of the items we tested were seashells from our Founder and Executive Director Ms. Smithโ€™s recent trip to the beach. Their predictions sparked real scientific thinking. ๐Ÿš

๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ A huge thank you to for their investment in this program, which allowed us to expand into Douglas County. Beyond the monthly sessions with the Pre-K students, we donated STEM books to Cedar Preschool, including titles for the older kids in their out-of-school-time program, and shared a few with Mayor Rochelle Robinson of the City of Douglasville so she has STEM books to read to youth as part of her Mayorโ€™s Reading Program. ๐Ÿ“–

Closing out this program year, we are reminded that when we put STEM books and experiences in front of young learners, we are โ€œunveiling potential through exposure,โ€ one circle, one bubble, one seashell at a time. ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ’ซ

The journey to becoming a STEM professional begins long before a young adult takes their first step on a college campus or even decides during high school which college to attend. โœจ

It begins as soon as a young learner can listen to a STEM book being read aloud ๐Ÿ“–, repeat the STEM concepts they encounter in hands-on activities ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿงช, and develop the fine motor skills to engage in hands-on STEM activities with the support of a caring adult. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฟโ€๐Ÿซ

Our work to โ€œunveil potential through exposureโ€ begins with our youngest learners ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿฟ. Through our STEM Literacy Program ๐Ÿ“š, STEM at the Library program ๐Ÿ›๏ธ, support for STEM events and programming at schools ๐Ÿซ, and participation in select community events ๐ŸŒ, we introduce early learners and elementary-age students to STEM through books ๐Ÿ“–, hands-on activities ๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿ”ญ, and engaging experiences with caring adults. ๐ŸŒŸ

As we celebrate our 20th anniversary ๐ŸŽ‰, we ask that you invest in this work by donating to our $20K for 20 Years fundraising campaign. Every gift matters, no matter the size. Consider giving generously at a level that fits your capacity to support the next generation of STEM professionals ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฟโ€โš•๏ธ, whether that is $20, $200, $2,000, or any multiple of $20 in between. Make your contribution today or anytime before the campaign ends on Friday, June 12. โฐ

Your investment engages young learners in STEM, providing the early exposure that can shape a lifetime of discovery and opportunity. ๐Ÿ’œ

When training future STEM Researchers, technical skills matter. But STEM literacy and communication skills are just as essential. ๐Ÿ”ฌโœจ

When students can read, write, talk, and do STEM, they sharpen their thinking, articulate STEM ideas with confidence, and prepare for college coursework, research, and STEM research competitions and conferences. They also become better at asking thoughtful questions and contributing meaningfully in lab and classroom settings.

That is why we designed and run our STEM Journal Club for Metro Atlanta high school students. ๐Ÿ“š

Students in each cohort learn to:

๐Ÿ”Ž Read, analyze, and discuss STEM journal articles

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Communicate STEM with their peers during group sessions

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Communicate STEM to the general public by developing and recording podcast episodes on their favorite articles from the program

Under the guidance of Dr. Zakiya Whatley, our podcast instructor, students from Cohort 6 recorded episodes that are now live on our SEM Explained podcast channel. ๐ŸŽง

In 2005, our work started at one middle school in Atlanta. Twenty years later, the work continues.

As we wrap up our 2025-26 program year, with final program activities in the next month, we want to reflect on our very first program year twenty years ago. In the 2005-06 academic year, we served one middle school in Atlanta Public Schools, Sylvan Hills Middle School. At the end of that year, the principal of the school presented our Founder and Executive Director, Ms. Tokiwa Smith, with a plaque thanking SEM Link for the impact our programming made at the school.

SEM Link was founded on the premise that to encourage youth to pursue STEM careers, it is critical that we provide opportunities for them to meet and interact with the STEM community, hence the name Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link. As we celebrate this milestone year, 20 years of โ€œunveiling potential through exposure,โ€ what has remained consistent through it all is our impact on the lives of youth. The work hasnโ€™t changed.

We support schools by engaging youth in hands-on STEM activities during the school day and at STEM events at the school. ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿงช We host our own STEM events in the community and support community STEM events. We provide opportunities for youth to develop their STEM literacy skills at every age, from being read to as early learners to guiding older youth in writing graphic novels and analyzing and discussing STEM journal articles. ๐Ÿ“šโœ๏ธ And we connect youth to the STEM community to provide them with positive adult role models in STEM, showing them that they can do STEM and become STEM professionals. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฟโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿซ

As we invest in the lives of youth, we ask that you invest in us by making a contribution to our $20K for 20 Years fundraising campaign. ๐Ÿ’ฐ Make a contribution of $20, $40, $60, or any other multiple of 20 to honor this milestone and continue โ€œunveiling potential through exposureโ€ for the next generation of STEM professionals. Donate today or anytime before the campaign ends on June 12 at https://givebutter.com/SEMLink20Kfor20Years. Link also in bio. ๐Ÿ’ต

๐ŸŒฑ Weโ€™re celebrating 20 years of โ€œunveiling potential through exposureโ€ for youth! ๐ŸŒฑ

After our holiday break and a winter storm that postponed our Community STEM programs, we got back to it:

๐Ÿ”ฌ STEM Journal Club resumed in January
๐Ÿ“š STEM Literacy Program for early learners and Community STEM program resumed in February

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ STEM Journal Club students recorded their podcast episodes in March

๐Ÿ’ง STEM at the Park returned with a water investigation in Perkerson Park

Our programs help youth have fun while learning STEM, build confidence in their ability to do STEM, and connect them with positive adult role models in STEM.

โœจ Watch the recap video to see the excitement! โœจ

Early learners saw themselves in STEM through characters that looked like them in the books read to them, followed by hands-on activities. Youth in the homeschool group we support, The Happy Black Parent, engaged in hands-on STEM during MeetUp Mondays. Youth engaged in hands-on STEM in their neighborhood through our STEM at the Library program in partnership with Fulton County Public Library System. And the young scholars in our STEM Journal Club developed STEM Literacy and Communication skills critical for college and career in STEM.

๐Ÿ’œ Invest in the next generation of STEM professionals by contributing to our $20K for 20 Years fundraising campaign. Give $20, $40, $100, $200, or any multiple of $20. No gift is too small or too large for one of the most important investments one can make: an investment in our youth. ๐Ÿ’œ
