In preparation for the first assessment visit to the El-Riego community in Nicaragua, our team took the initiative to create a comprehensive flyer. The purpose of the flyer was to introduce the community members to Engineers Without Borders (EWB) and provide information about each member of our project team.

Our aim is to establish a strong foundation for our relationship with the community by fostering familiarity and mutual understanding. We believe that this approach will allow us to work collaboratively and effectively with the community to achieve our shared goals.

We can't wait to meet them this summer!

The EWB-GT Nicaragua team is beyond grateful for the support from our engineering dean, Raheem Beyah. His assistance will help our team as we continue to develop our assessment trip and fund the new well system to provide water for the community in El Riego, Nicaragua.

Dean Beyah’s support is another example of his dedication to advancing the field of engineering and providing more real-world opportunities for students.

Our team has officially started a new project to provide the El Riego community of Nicaragua with a new water supply system! Due to Hurricane Iota in November 2020, the community was left without a stable water supply. For over 27 months, 653 residents have been without water service in their homes and are required to get water from rivers or two old sources. Our team is working to expand on the pre-existing well and conduct a hydrogeological study to provide the community with a safe and stable water supply. We plan on traveling to El Riego, Nicaragua in May, 2023 for an assessment trip.

As we kick off our new project, we would like to introduce two of our mentors, our REIC (Responsible Engineer in Charge) Roger Price and team mentor Lucas Curry! We are so grateful for their mentorships and look forward to the progression of the project.

Roger Price graduated from Cornell University with a bachelors degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Penn State University with a graduate degree in Wastewater Treatment. Since his retirement, Roger has been working with various Engineers Without Boarders teams including Penn State, Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech, among others, for the past six years. Additionally, he traveled to Tanzania, Gambia, and Ecuador for three EWN projects.

Lucas Curry graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Environmental Engineering and The University of New Mexico with a Masters of Water Resources. While in the Peace Corps, Lucas worked on water-fed sanitation constructing a spring-source, gravity-fed potable water system in a rural indigenous community. He organized an implemented a latrine construction project for 60 families. Currently, Lucas works at Tetra Tech as a water resource engineer.

We are thrilled to see our project progress with the valuable guidance of both Roger and Lucas!
