While your kid's school might have been spared from any headline-catching, violent events, possibilities are that less dramatic acts of hostility, such as bullying and harassment, occur there every day. Many schools have programs to prevent violence and aid to keep students safe. But security precautions should not stop there. As a parent, you also can take specific actions to enhance school security. To raise awareness of school security and security issues, the National Criminal Offense Prevention Council, best understood for its 25-year-old precious icon, McGruff the Criminal offense Canine, established the Be Safe initiative in cooperation with National PTA. This effort, moneyed by the Allstate Structure, Assa Abloy Group and the Security Industry Association, supplies advice that moms and dads, community members and teachers can utilize to help make school an enjoyable environment for all children. The National Criminal offense Prevention Council supplies the following suggestions for moms and dads. * Listen and talk with your kid regularly. Interacting with your kid on a variety of topics related to school, pals and his or her interests can provide you valuable insight. Speak to your child about violence and how to resolve issues. * Set an example. Show your child that you can settle conflicts quietly and nonviolently. Also, reveal your support for school policies and rules. If your child feels a guideline is wrong, describe how the rule can increase school security. * Work with others. Sign up with a mom and dad, school or neighborhood association to go over issues with violence in the community. Work together to discover services and ways you can supply support to the schools in your neighborhood. The National Criminal offense Avoidance Council offers tools for parents as part of its Be Safe and Sound effort. The 'Caregivers' Guide to Security and Security,' for example, outlines what moms and dads can do to improve school safety and security. It consists of an introduction of school safety and security guidelines, an assessment list and advice and pointers on promoting for change at their kids's schools. Another resource, the 'School Security and Security Toolkit: A Guide for Parents, Schools, and Neighborhoods,' helps parents and community members in dealing with school administrators and policymakers to help make schools as safe as possible.
