Today, we are featuring F***y Jackson Coppin - the first Black woman to head an institute of higher education in the United States
- as the final installment of our Women’s History Month series.

F***y had a passion for education. Born enslaved in 1837 in Washington, D.C., F***y’s aunt bought her freedom when she was a young girl. Eventually F***y was able to study at Oberlin College.

After graduation, she taught Greek, Latin, and math at Philadelphia’s Institute for Colored Youth (now the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania). In 1869, she became principal of the institute, a role she held until her retirement in 1902.

F***y worked with her husband, an AME minister, to promote self-help programs and education in the U.S. and South Africa.

Coppin State University, an HBCU in Baltimore, is named in F***y’s honor.

“I would have been completely behind if it wasn’t for Passion for Life.”

Jaslynn knew she had a passion for dance. When she started our program in 9th grade, Jaslynn was looking for ways to pursue a professional dance career and own a dance studio.

Working with our Passion for Life coaches, Jaslynn discovered her other passion - helping others. Passion for Life was “one of the best things I could have done in high school,” explained Jaslynn.

Jaslynn is now a Youth Instructor at Agape Youth and Family Center, where she mentors 3rd-8th grade students.
