Meet Lemayian (Lema), a 9yr old Masai boy living with Autism. His Masai name means "the blessed one".

Lema loves his pencils and sketch pad and takes them everywhere he goes. You can often find him alone, sitting under the tree doing what he loves best -drawing. That is his happy place.

Until three years ago, Lema was non-verbal. This means that he spoke no words at all. Discovering art helped him find a voice. Although he still does not speak very much, Lema is happy to communicate the ideas that he draws on his paper.

Lema's family has experienced stigma within their community. They know that loving and accepting Lema for who he is, is the best example for others to follow. They educate people in their village about Autism as often as they can. This has facilitated acceptance for Lema.

Autism is not selective of race, ethnicity, socio-economic status or gender. It does not occur through any fault of a parent.

According to the World Health Organization, about 1 in every 100 children lives with Autism. Many children like Lema need us all to educate ourselves about Autism, become advocates and choose every day to include him (and others like him).

Children with Autism interact with the world around them in different ways including the arts, sports and music. They may excel at academics or have intellectual disabilities. Either way, every child living with Autism (and other disabilities) has the right to appropriate, inclusive education. Early intervention is key.

Reposted from athlete, Joyce Ainensasi, had trouble walking when she was born. Her parents were given the following advice to straighten her bones: dig a hole in the ground, put Joyce in it, pack it with soil.

Joyce stood in the hole, for no less than six hours, week after week.

Education and awareness are vital in ending health disparities children like Joyce face. We need your support to close the gap πŸ’ͺ➑️
