Open wide for some limbless facts!

Caecilians of all species (including this Typhlonectes natans) exhibit a shared derived character in the form of their two rows of maxillary teeth! Also known as a synapomorphy, these two rows of teeth on their upper allow a single row on their lower to slot between them, tightly securing prey!

Yellow there!

Beyoncé the beautiful Eyelash Viper (Bothriechis schlegelii) is just one of over 1,000 resident reptiles and amphibians who have been transported from Blue Heron Nature Preserve to their new home in Decatur's Legacy Park! Your donations to our Emergency Fund made this safe journey possible, and we're still in awe of your generosity as we settle in too and stretch our...oh...

Intimidated yet?

Today's post from 2025 features a Fire-bellied Toad (Bombina orientalis) demonstrating a more traditional version of the Unken Reflex mentioned in yesterday's C. craspedopus video! This posture displays the aposematic warning colors on its belly and is used by other toxic amphibians, though the behavior itself was named after this species in particular because of the "unk unk" sound they make while warding off predators in this fierce pose!

Now that's what we call a ball!

We captured this Fringed Leaf Frog (Cruziohyla craspedopus) demonstrating a unique defensive posture (a version of the Unken Reflex) during a routine enclosure check! While this resident wasn't in any danger, it shows that survival instincts are still present in captive amphibians!

No lungs detected!? Red alert!

For the Red Salamander (Pseudotriton ruber), lacking lungs is no emergency--it's biology! Like all members of Family Plethodontidae, the Red Salamander lacks lungs and respires through its sensitive skin (cutaneous) membranes, also relying on its oral mucous membranes. Considering that 2/3 of all extant salamander species are members of this family, we'd call this technique an success!

Frosty Tuesday Troopers!

While most of our team was focused on hauling items from Blue Heron Nature Preserve to our new educational facility in Legacy Park last week, AF Research Coordinator Roxana Pena, Conservation Collections Coordinator Ashley Byrd, and new Conservation Research Bridge Program Research Assistant Lucy were carefully transporting our precious Frosted Flatwoods Salamanders (Ambystoma cingulatum) to their new home at Agnes Scott College!

Mindbender Monday!

AF's Director of Education Crystal Mandica and Education Coordinator Amanda Dahlgren (who captured the photo on the left in 2023) can feel a kinship with these two topsy-turvy Eastern Newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) as they joined the rest of our staff and volunteers in working themselves sideways to move the last of our bins and enclosures from Blue Heron Nature Preserve to Legacy Park this past weekend!
