Vote NO on HB422
Right now in Ware County, Georgia, the House GOP is voting to take over the Board of Elections and potentially remove all 3 Black members. Similar actions are being taken in Macon-Bibb and Ben Hill counties. Local organizers say this is a new coordinated effort to strip power away from local boards of elections in the state, which are responsible for ensuring a fair election process for all. These moves are a clear attack on our communities and an attempt at racially motivated voter suppression. Georgians, take action now and tell our state Senators to vote NO on HB422.
VOTE NO on SB62
Advocacy Needed: Urge Senators to VOTE NO on SB 62! On the Senate Floor Today!
Contact your State Senator to vote NO on SB 62, the homeless encampment bill. The bill prohibits a city or county from adopting a policy to prohibit or discourage enforcement of criminal laws against street sleeping, camping, or obstructing a sidewalk. It prohibits a policy discouraging law enforcement or prosecutors from enforcing these criminal laws. It gives the Attorney General the power to sue cities and counties for a violation, as well as any citizen the right to sue on behalf of the state! It authorizes the state to designate the property for sanctioned encampments, i.e., parking lots with portapotties and potable water, but no funding, and no requirement for housing or services.
SB 62 would make it illegal for a city or county to fail to enforce criminal laws against homeless people for street sleeping, camping, or blocking a sidewalk. This bill will be on the Senate floor today!
Call or email your State Senator and urge them to VOTE NO on SB 62! We need housing for homeless people.
There will be amendments offered by the author and others that seek to address some of the biggest problems in the bill. Ask them to vote YES on amendments and NO on the final bill as amended. To identify your state Senator, go to www.openstates.org and enter your home address. The Senate is the upper chamber.
Vote YES on HB462
Raise the Age
Ask members of the Georgia House of Representatives Rules Committee to vote YES to get the "Raise the Age Act", House Bill 462, a vote by the full House.
What to Say
Dear Representative _________, Please bring HB 462 to the House floor as soon as possible for a vote by the full House. This bill creates a multi-agency implementation committee to explore changing the age of juvenile court jurisdiction to encompass non-violent 17-year-olds who are first-time offenders. The juvenile justice system does a better job than the adult system of holding young people accountable when they commit minor offenses by requiring youth to attend school, make restitution to victims, and attend community-based rehabilitative programs that focus on the causes of the problem behavior. The bill has a staggered rollout for the work of the committee and funding-reliant implementation. Please note that this bill does NOT affect serious young offenders, who will continue to be tried in adult court. Thank you for your service and for all you do for Georgia’s children.
