Fifty years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court decided Gregg v. Georgia, making Georgia’s rewritten statute the constitutional framework for the modern American death penalty. When will the state end a practice that can take an innocent life and offers no remedy when it gets it wrong? Read the latest op-ed by our Executive Director Vanessa Griddine-Jones.

The modern death penalty in the United States emerged from court cases involving Georgia. Capital punishment should end because there is little recourse for the innocent.

Last night, the State of Tennessee tried to execute Christa Pike and could not.

Every process, every institution, and every system is made of people, and people err. Every other sentence this state imposes leaves room for that error. The death penalty is the one that does not. Last night in Nashville was not an accident in an otherwise sound process. It is the process.

That is why we call it state-sponsored violence: a government, acting in the name of every person who lives there, deliberately taking a life. Georgia executes people in our names, with the same drug, and it has not said it will stop. Stop killing in our names and calling it justice. www.gfadp.org/takeaction
