I’m honored to be featured in the National Kidney Foundation’s latest story, ā€œThere’s Power in Telling Your Kidney Story.ā€ This piece highlights the journey I’ve navigated—from kidney failure during pregnancy to transplant—driven by a flawed eGFR formula that delayed life-saving care.

By sharing my story, I’ve learned that personal experiences don’t just inform—they can inspire real change. That’s why I started the Kidney Champion Foundation: to turn awareness into action and advocate for kidney health policies that can prevent others from facing the same battlesļæ¼.

Thank you to the NKF for creating a platform where patient voices lead the conversation, change happens, and hope is renewed.

I’m proud to share this letter from Congressman Buddy Carter to Secretary Kennedy, urging the removal of oral-only phosphate lowering therapies from the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Prospective Payment System (PPS) bundle — a harmful policy that took effect on January 1, 2025.

This policy change has already had devastating consequences for many people living with chronic kidney disease and ESRD:
• Patients are losing access to essential medications prescribed by their physicians.
• Physicians are struggling to effectively treat their patients.
• Vulnerable populations face even greater barriers to care.

The bipartisan Kidney Patient Act — which had broad support from patients, caregivers, and advocacy organizations — would have delayed this policy and protected access to life-saving medicines. Unfortunately, it didn’t pass in time, and now we are seeing the harmful impact firsthand.

Removing oral-only medicines from the PPS bundle is not just a policy fix — it’s a matter of patient safety, health equity, and quality of life.

Thank you, Congressman Carter, for standing with the kidney community.

šŸ“¢ Let’s keep raising our voices to ensure patients can access the treatments they need and deserve.

Had an incredible time at House of Hope ATL's Wellness Wednesday event in Decatur, GA! Each week, the community is invited to a free exercise class, followed by a wellness speaker and a complimentary lunch, thanks to the support of AARP. I had the pleasure of speaking about kidney disease—what causes it, how to prevent it, and what to do if you're diagnosed. The audience was so engaged, asking great questions that made me feel like I was really making a difference.

A special thanks to Ardelyx for sponsoring my talk, and to the American Kidney Fund for creating the Kidney Health Coach program, which makes opportunities like this possible. I’ve done many talks on kidney disease, but each one is unique, and the enthusiasm I encounter never gets old!

If you'd like me to speak at your church, corporation, or community center, feel free to send me a message. I'd love to connect with you!

Today we recognize the nation’s first AMKD Awareness Day! People who are from or have ancestors from west or central Africa are at increased risk of having a mutation in one or both of the genes that causes APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD). It is estimated that 13% of Black Americans have two mutations of the APOL1 gene, and these individuals have a 1 in 5 chance of developing a rapidly progressing form of genetic kidney disease. Become by learning more about AMKD and join the Kidney Fund in AMKD Awareness Day: kidneyfund.org/APOL1aware
