Justice Center for Sacred Theological Studies

Justice Center for Sacred Theological Studies Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary (JCSTS) is now doing business as the Justice Center for Sacred Theological Studies (JCSTS).

Our mission is to enliven the human heart through education that centers Christ's justice. April marks a special season of The Justice Center's (formerly the Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary) 155-year history! Paul Roberts, Sr., President of Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary says. “This Anniversary is about more than simply marking our past but marks the significance of the seminary’s pr

esent moment while looking forward expectantly to its future of equipping and empowering whole networks of workers for faith and justice.”

Special Events will be held throughout 2026 for learning partners, alumni, course facilitators, and supporters as the JCSTS platform continues to pave education possibilities for leaders in their communities, congregations, and circles of influence. More about us... https://www.jcsts.org

🇺🇸 Flag Day Reflection — June 14 🇺🇸

This Flag Day, the Justice Center invites our community to reflect on the meaning carried by the flag raised across our nation.

Many have looked to it as a sign of democratic promise and belonging. For others—especially Black Americans across generations—it has also pointed toward promises that remain unfulfilled. Together, these experiences sit within the nation’s ongoing story of aspiration and struggle.

People of faith are reminded that civic symbols carry moral weight. They ask us what kind of community we are forming and whether the dignity of all people is being upheld in practice as well as in principle. The Christian witness often requires both gratitude for what has been given and honesty about what is still broken.

On this day, we give thanks for the ideals that continue to call the nation forward. We also renew our commitment to justice and repair, so that the image of God in every person is not only spoken of but protected in lived reality.

“Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.” — Micah 6:8

🌈 Pride Month Reflection 🌈

This Pride Month, the Justice Center invites our community to reflect on a core Reformed conviction: all people are created in the image of God and worthy of dignity, respect, and love.

We give thanks for the diversity of God’s creation and our shared calling to build communities where all people can flourish.

As followers of Christ, we are called to love our neighbors and seek justice. We are called to bear witness to God’s reconciling work in the world. Pride Month gives us space to listen more closely, learn more deeply, and practice a faith shaped by radical hospitality, grace, and hope.

Atlanta Pride Events
In partnership with Atlanta Pride and the City of Atlanta, this gathering explores the history of LGBTQ+ spaces in Atlanta. Through storytelling and conversation, participants reflect on how these spaces have shaped movements for justice, belonging, and social change.

As we celebrate Pride Month, may we continue to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with one another. May our faith lead us toward communities of welcome, where the love of Christ is made visible through compassion, solidarity, and hope.

Juneteenth invites us to remember more than a date—it calls us to reflect on the enduring pursuit of freedom, justice, and human dignity.

Explore powerful stories of faith, resilience, and liberation through the Center’s free curriculum. These classroom-ready lessons examine how faith communities responded to oppression, sustained hope in the face of injustice, and helped shape movements for freedom. By connecting historical events to contemporary questions of justice, leadership, and civic responsibility, learners are challenged to consider how the lessons of Juneteenth continue to inform our moral choices today.

Continue the conversation and enroll in our new course Juneteenth: Faith, Freedom, and Justice!

Explore the historical, theological, and civic significance of Juneteenth while examining the enduring relationship between faith, liberation, and the ongoing work of justice.

As we commemorate the delayed arrival of freedom to enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865, we are reminded that the work of justice requires both remembrance and action.
