It has been going on for almost ten months now.
The current drought in Virginia started on September 9, 2025. That was the first week that any portion of Virginia was designated as "D1", which is the least intense level of drought.
As of June 16, 2026, 100% of Virginia is in some intensity level of drought (D1-D4).
For THIS week (June 23 report):
* 22% of the Commonwealth is in moderate drought (D1)
* 53% is in severe drought (D2)
* 25% in in extreme drought (D3)
The hardest hit areas include the Piedmont Region, Southside Virginia, and the Eastern Shore.
NOTE: If you would like to provide input to the US Drought Monitor about conditions on YOUR farm, you can do that here (yes, even from your smartphone in your tractor cab, along with a picture of your crops in the field) >>
