On Tuesday, April 28, the Athens Classic City Lions partnered with members of the UGA Pre-Optometry Club to sort, count, and box used eyeglasses and sunglasses. The result of our labor was fifteen boxes containing 2,239 pairs of glasses that will be sent to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation in Chamblee. There, they will be further sorted, cleaned, and prepared for overseas mission trips in order to help people who desperately need vision care. These people sometimes are unable to work because of their poor vision. So receiving these glasses may help them to feed their families.
We had an enjoyable afternoon getting to know each other and we hope to continue partnering on this and other service projects.
Please remember to donate your used eyeglasses by dropping them into a Lions Club collection box.

On Tuesday, April 28, the Athens Classic City Lions Club partnered with members of the UGA Pre-Optometry Club to count, sort, and box prescription eyeglasses, prescription sunglasses, and non-prescription sunglasses.

Two Lions and five Pre-Optometry students enjoyed working together for nearly two and a half hours and filled 15 boxes with a total of 2,239 pairs of glasses!

These glasses will be donated to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation whose volunteers will clean and further sort them by prescription. The glasses are then sent overseas with medical missions to be distributed to people in desperate need of vision correction.

These glasses provide better vision and, in so many cases, help improve the economic well being of families. Many people with poor vision can no longer do the kind of work they are used to, or find alternative work, leading often to having no income at all.

Thank you to everyone who donates their old eyeglasses by dropping them into a Lions Club donation box!

Thank you to all Lions Clubs and Lions who place the boxes, in local businesses, optometrist and ophthalmologist offices, and collect, sort, and donate the eyeglasses!

This is not just a humanitarian service but it's also an environmental service.

Our Club recently hosted Lion Jonathan Yaeger, Lions District 18-I Diabetes Chair.
Lion Jon's presentation -- "Diabetes: The Largest Pandemic in Human History?" -- was extremely informative and helpful to our Club. We learned that more than 80% of the 98 million people with
High blood sugar don’t know it; and that 20% of people with Type 2 Diabetes are undiagnosed.
Lion Jon also shared important materials to help our club "pre-screen" community members and raise awareness of the disease. The pre-screening form is in the photos below. Please assess your risk. Also, enjoy the helpful information about Lions.

December is always a very busy month for the Athens Classic City Lions.
Our members collected food for the Athens Area Emergency Food Bank and toys for Toys for Tots.
Everyone brought their items to our annual Christmas party (lots of fun!)
Our club also worked with the Salvation Army. The club plus individual Lions bought gifts for children from SA's Angel Tree. At least three Lions from our club rang bells to raise funds for their Red Kettle and six of us helped with the annual Angel Tree gift distribution.
We're looking forward to an awesome new year in 2026.
