ALCA's signature project is the restoration and renovation of the former Trinity High School has been the dream of many people for more than a generation. Founded by the America

n Missionary Association in 1865, Trinity was the only high school for black students before integration. The school was built on Fort Henderson, an earthen-work fortress built by Union soldiers during the American Civil War. The school closed in 1970 due to a desegregation order. ALCA made Trinity and Fort Henderson it’s mission to preserve one of Athens’ oldest historical landmarks. ALCA is proud to open the Pincham-Lincoln Center at the Trinity-Fort Henderson Complex in December 2015. Why preserving our legacy matters. ❤️

Our history is more than stories from the past—it is the foundation for future generations.

Every Trinity memory, family tradition, church gathering, school event, photograph, and shared experience helps tell the story of who we are as a community. Preserving our legacy ensures that the lessons, values, and memories that shaped us continue to inspire those who come after us.

The Athens-Limestone Community Association is proud to help preserve and celebrate the stories that connect generations and keep our history alive.

💬 We want to hear from you:

What is one lesson, memory, or tradition from our community that you hope future generations will always remember?

Robert Penn walked miles each day to attend Trinity School — all while helping with responsibilities at home. Through discipline and perseverance, he continued his education and went on to earn a law degree from Western Reserve University, later practicing law in Toledo, Ohio.

His journey reflects the foundation that began at Trinity School — long before it became Trinity High School — and the generations of students who pursued education against the odds.

His story is a powerful reminder that the path may not always be easy…
but where it leads can change generations.

Every step taken in faith and determination
leads to a legacy that inspires generations.

One brick. One legacy. Generations forever.

05/04/2026

Before it was Trinity High School… it was Trinity School.

A place where formerly enslaved individuals and Black students came to learn, grow, and build a future through education.

This legacy didn’t begin with a building —
it began with a purpose.

From the early days following the war at Fort Henderson…
to generations of students who walked through its doors…

This is history that shaped our community.

And now, we have the opportunity to preserve it.

The ALCA Museum is currently in the works — a future home dedicated to telling the full story of Trinity School and the generations that followed.

🩺 Only about 5% of doctors in the U.S. are Black…
Now imagine doing it over 100 YEARS AGO 👀

Trinity Legacy Highlight 🏫✨

Before they became trailblazing physicians, they were Trinity Graduates.

👏🏾 Alexander Collier (Class of 1901) and Noah Franklin Turner were among the earliest Trinity students to continue their education at Fisk University.
Their journey led them to Meharry Medical College, and ultimately back to Athens, where they opened medical practices that transformed access to healthcare in their hometown and served their community for generations.

Let that sink in.

At a time when opportunities were limited and access was unequal,
they chose to:

✔️ Pursue higher education
✔️ Enter the medical field
✔️ Serve their own community

Today, African Americans make up about 14% of the U.S. population—but only around 5% of physicians nationwide
And yet, Trinity graduates were doing this work generations ahead of their time.
That’s not just history…

That’s legacy. 🧱
That’s impact. 💜💛
