New World Screwworms are parastic flies that lay eggs in open wounds, genitalia or mucous membranes of live warm-blooded animals. These eggs hatch into a type of parasitic larvae (maggots) that only feeds on living tissue. Infested wounds quickly become infected and, if left untreated, will kill infested animals.
While there are no cases of New World Screwworm in Texas at this time, this an opportunity to learn about its potential impact and our planning and preparations in the event it does arrive.
