BFSO Brief History
In February 1980, W. Ed Wilker initiated a meeting to consider establishing mechanisms for support, fellowship, and sharing resources. In an organizational planning meeting on October 23, 1981, Larry E. Blount, Eddie Daniels Jr., and W. Ed Wilker made formal presentations that focused on the status of blacks at the University of Georgia and the need for the formation of a Black

Faculty and Staff Organization. The Black Faculty & Staff Organization (BFSO) at the University of Georgia acts as a support network for Black faculty, staff, and students by playing a vital role in conceptualizing, advocating, and helping to implement programs and services focused on equity and diversity at UGA and in the Athens Community.

Each year, speakers are invited to deliver a lecture that honors Ms. Early’s quiet determination and dignity as she strived to ensure that the state’s flagship university became an institution of higher learning for all the people of Georgia.

The 26th Annual Mary Frances Early Lecture will be Monday, February 9, 2026.​​​​​​​ The event is free and open to the public and takes place at 2:00 pm in Mahler Hall at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

Dr. Adrienne Madison will be delivering the address, “A Legacy in Bloom: Rooted, Resilient, and Reaching.” Learn more about Dr. Madison and the event on our website, https://grad.uga.edu/about/annual-events/mary-frances-early-lecture-series/
