Our Athens Lions Club was proud to recognize the ongoing contributions of the Athens Walmart and their Vision Center to our Lions Recycle For Sight eyeglass recycling program today (October 15th). Lions Jim McLaren (our "Glasses Getter") and Mike Harrington (our club secretary) presented a certificate of appreciation to Dena Mitchell with the Athens Walmart Vision Center. The Vision Center has been a great partner to our club for many years.

The Lions Clubs collect used eyeglasses (and sunglasses) as part of the global mission of Lions Clubs International to combat blindness. In just about any home, you can find an old pair of eyeglasses that are no longer being used. That same pair of eyeglasses can change another person's life.

Throughout the year, clubs in Ohio collect used eyeglasses and deliver them to sorting sites like VOSH Ohio in Pandora, Ohio. The eyeglasses are cleaned, sorted by size and prescription strength, and then packaged for use on mission trips around the world.

Our Athens Lions Club has eyeglass (and sunglasses) collection boxes at the following locations across Athens:

> Athens County Public Library, 30 Home Street, Athens
> Walmart, 929 East State Street, Athens
> Mac's Work Wear, 940 East State Street, Athens
> New To You store, 90 Columbus Road, Athens
> Athens Eye Professionals, 199 Columbus Road, Athens
> Athens Farmer's Market, Athens Community Center, 701 E State Street, Athens (During Farmer's Market Events)

Please note: we only accept eyeglasses and sunglasses. We are unable to accept the eyeglass cases.

Our club is also very grateful to the fantastic support we continue to receive from the community for making these donations to the program! Our club typically collects several thousand pairs of eyeglasses each year.

Today we celebrate White Cane Day! đŸ‘©â€đŸŠŻâ€âžĄïž

White Cane Day (sometimes called White Cane Safety Day) has been observed nationally since October 15th 1964. We take this day to reflect on and acknowledge the achievements of those who are blind or those who have low vision and the freedom and independence that white canes can offer those individuals.

Our broadcast reading service also helps to bring independence to our listeners with voices from our wonderful volunteers you can depend on to read the news, weather, your favorite magazines and MORE! 👏

You don’t have to be a detective to figure out what’s on VOICEcorps tonight at 9! 😉

Tune in to Old Time Radio: Detective Tuesdays to get your fix of good old-fashioned sleuthing and crime solving
all from the comfort of your own home!

VOICEcorps listeners are comprised of individuals with no vision, low vision, and/or other print disabilities that make reading their favorite detective tales difficult or impossible and by broadcasting shows like Old Time Radio we bring back the fun and nostalgia of those stories. 💜

Click after the magnifying glass icon in the comments to listen live OR tell your Amazon Alexa smart speaker to “Play VOICEcorps skill!”

It’s true, all VOICEcorps listeners are able to hear grocery ads every Thursday at Noon! 🛒

We air grocery ads for Kroger, Giant Eagle, Aldi and Meijer as well as provide the latest in food news. đŸ„—

This has over time proven to be one of our most popular programming segments and has become a valuable resource for those who have no vision, low vision, or who have a print-disability such as Parkinson’s disease.

Members of our Athens Lions Club attended the Athens Farmers Market today for their Senior Health Fair - with an emphasis on Fall Prevention (and co-organized by Ohio Older Adults Fall Prevention Coalition hosted out of Washington County, Ohio; September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month).

We shared our Message In A Bottle (MIAB) program with the public - our program to share emergency medical information with first responders who respond to calls for medical assistance at community member's homes. Thirty two MIAB kits were distributed to the public.

Thanks to Lions Dave Gehlauf, program coordinator and Mike Harrington for attending the Health Fair and sharing the details of our program.
