Drawing New Maps Together

There is a line from Margaret Wheatley's poem Turning to One Another that lingered throughout this year's Athens County Nonprofit Executive Directors Retreat:

"Trust that meaningful conversations can change your world."

At a time when many nonprofit leaders are navigating uncertainty, shifting funding landscapes, growing community needs, and increasing demands on their organizations, it felt like the right place to begin.

Turning to One Another
by Margaret J. Wheatley

There is no greater power than a community discovering what it cares about.

Ask “What is possible?” not “What’s wrong?” Keep asking.

Notice what you care about. Assume that many others share your dreams.

Be brave enough to start a conversation that matters. Talk to people you know. Talk to people you don’t know. Talk to people you never talk to.

Be intrigued by the differences you hear. Expect to be surprised. Treasure curiosity more than certainty.

Invite in everybody who cares to work on what’s possible. Acknowledge that everyone is an expert about something. Know that creative solutions come from new connections.

Remember, you don’t fear people whose story you know. Real listening always brings people closer together.

Trust that meaningful conversations can change your world. Rely on human goodness.

Stay together

The future of Athens County is shaped by people who care enough to participate. 👥

Every day, individuals across our county are contributing their time, talents, relationships, ideas, and financial resources to strengthen our community. They are serving on nonprofit boards, volunteering at local events, mentoring emerging leaders, supporting community initiatives, and investing in solutions that help our neighbors thrive.🦾

There are many causes and contributors to housing insecurity. That means there needs to be many pathways and resources available to make progress toward solving this problem.

The Housing Security Fund will bolster existing efforts and power new ideas. Here are just a few examples of how the fund can be leveraged:
Increasing organizations’ capacity to support emergency lodging and related services for people experiencing housing insecurity.
Providing match funds for grant opportunities.
Supporting outreach and community education events.
Raising funds for targeted projects (such as capital needs for an emergency shelter or partnering with existing events).

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th each year, marks our country’s second Independence Day. Although Juneteenth has long been celebrated in the African American community, this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans. Annually, starting in June 2021, Ohio University celebrates this occasion with programming and activities. This year's event is being hosted in partnership with the Athens County Foundation, the Athens NAACP, and the Mount Zion Black Cultural Center.

Celebrate freedom, culture, and community at the 2026 Juneteenth Festival on Friday, June 19, from 1-4 p.m. at Richland Avenue Park! In case of rain, the event will move to the Athens Community Center.
