GCC commissioned local artist Joey Rose for a zine that depicts the effects of exclusionary discipline, especially for children with developmental disabilities. The intention of this zine is to tell the story of restorative justice in schools, and how it can be an effective tool in repairing harm. This Zine was made possible by a grant from the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities.

Here's our final peek back at our wonderful spring event last month! We were so very lucky to have Chantel Eaton as our superstar Emcee this year.
Chantel is a Licensed Master Social Worker serving as a school social worker in the Clarke County School District, supporting Clarke Middle School and Barrow Elementary. She also works part-time as a high school social worker at Foothills Regional High School.

Chantel is a veteran of the United States Air Force and a graduate of Georgia State University and the University of Georgia. Chantel received the Howard B. Stroud Community Service Award from the Foundation for Excellence in Public Education and is passionate about working with youth. She loves helping them navigate challenges, build resilience, and avoid involvement in the justice system through advocacy and equitable opportunities.

Chantel has been a friend, a former board member, and a mentor to the UGA social work interns: we are so lucky to work with every year.

Just wanted to remind everyone about our free event with today at the Athens-Clarke County Library from 5:30-7:00pm!

This will be a safe and open space for education about our restorative justice efforts. It's a great opportunity to share your questions, concerns, and stories surrounding restorative justice in schools and the broader community.

We hope to have an open dialogue about restorative justice and address disparities, particularly surrounding BIPOC children and children with developmental disabilities. Light refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend!

Another look back at our spring community event:

Our spotlight partner is always an organization we work with and believe in, and our 2026 selection was no exception. Our program manager, Mikhayla Smith, has been doing great work with Hug Yoself Love Yoself, led by founder and Executive Director Alissa Tillman. Alissa is unflaggingly dedicated to her energetic work with youth and we're so happy to support HYLY. We donated 30% of our event proceeds to HYLY, and we look forward to working with Alissa in the future!

Still reveling in the memories of our spring community event!

This year, we were fortunate to have so many talented musicians in the format of two bands!

Cardynal & the Flock is a high energy blend of hip-hop, Indie and R&B who blew us away and left us wanting more.

Alys Willman, Gift Economy, and KG brought a beautifully unique eclectic style and folksy vibe.

Thank you all!

Taking a peek back at our spring community event: we are always blown away by the Clarke Middle School Peace Leaders. They have been sharing their leadership experiences with us for several years now. This year, Matt Fayoyin asked three students to come speak about how restorative practices change people’s minds and behaviors. The understanding, poise and passion of these three students humbled us.

Thank you, Matt! And thank you to the future of Athens!

We'd like to spend the next few posts reflecting on our spring event from a few weeks ago.

This year’s Spring Celebration theme was “Imagine.” As an organization working within many contexts—schools, the criminal justice system, neighborhoods, GCC is committed to understanding what we may not see or fully understand. We believe in cooperation, collaboration, and candid feedback in order to do our work better.

We put up an Imagination Station so that kids, teens, and adults could share how they envisioned an even better Athens area. Thank you to Board Member Deborah Gonzalez and Graduate Intern Elena Tothazan for inviting people to create, and answering their questions about what we do and how we do it!

Georgia Conflict Center is honored to have participated in the first five cohorts of the Principles over Passion Project at the Athens Clarke County Jail. Principles over Passion is a trauma-informed project that is part of ACC Jail's Re-entry Success Program.

GCC, along with several other community-based organizations, collaborate to offer programming related to workforce readiness, critical thinking, artistic expression, transition planning, and restorative justice. We are grateful for ongoing restorative justice facilitation from GCC Collaborator and former Executive Director, John Lash.

We're continuing our week of recapping last week's wonderful spring community celebration with some of the great artwork produced at our Imagination Station. Attendees were invited to dream about what makes Athens great and what could make our community even better.

From "fewer food deserts" to "more third spaces," we got some fantastic answers! We'd love to hear your thoughts. The world today can feel tough, and, quite frankly, isolating. Keeping the spirit of community alive is important. How do you keep your spirits up? What do you think would make Athens a better place for everyone?
