Ohio University faculty are once again asking the administration to make contract negotiations a priority.

Faculty voted overwhelmingly to form our union. The results were certified. We have shown up to bargain.

Yet nearly a year later, the university is still fighting us in court and now has canceled ANOTHER scheduled bargaining session.

We keep hearing that we are valued.

What we are waiting to see is action.

On June 16, Ohio University's bargaining team informed our team that they were canceling the June 23 bargaining session....

On June 16, Ohio University's bargaining team informed our team that they were canceling the June 23 bargaining session. The session had been mutually agreed upon since April 20. The explanation faculty received was that the administration had other "work-related commitments."

This wasn't a last-minute scheduling conflict. This wasn't an emergency. This wasn't a date that had just been proposed.

Let's be clear about what that means.

We have spent nearly a year bargaining a first contract. At the same time, the university continues spending time and resources fighting faculty's union election in court.

The administration regularly says faculty are essential to Ohio University's mission. Yet when it comes time to sit down and negotiate a contract, bargaining gets bumped for something else.

A fair contract determines working conditions, recruitment, retention, and the future of faculty at Ohio University. If that isn't important enough to keep a commitment made two months ago, what is?

Drop the lawsuit. Get back to the bargaining table. Finish the contract.

We met an incoming student and his parents visiting from New York and ended up talking for quite a while about what's happening at Ohio University.

His father is a proud union member. As we talked about bargaining, delays, and the administration's efforts to avoid recognizing what faculty have won, he didn't seem surprised.

He recognized the tactics immediately because he's seen them before. That's the thing about union-busting tactics. They aren't original.

Before his son has stepped into his first class, he understands that faculty aren't fighting over abstract issues. We're fighting over whether Ohio University will value the people responsible for delivering the education students and families are paying for.

That message seems to resonate everywhere except Cutler Hall.

Almost $625,000, and that’s just Ohio University’s President Lori Stewart Gonazalez’s base pay in 2025.

Yet when faculty compensation comes up, the conversation quickly turns to financial constraints.

Students notice that contradiction.

So do alumni.

So does the community.

People continue asking questions, and we aren’t impressed with the answers.

Ohio University wants faculty to believe there’s a budget crisis. Then people learn one employee made $859,521.67 in a single year.

Almost $860,000. That’s not a typo.

The issue isn’t one person’s paycheck.

The issue is that university leaders point to financial challenges when faculty compensation is discussed, while making entirely different choices elsewhere.

A budget is a statement of priorities. Ohio University keeps making theirs very clear.

Here's a simple question:

How serious can any institution be about student success if it won't reach a fair agreement with the people responsible for teaching those students?

Parents understand the connection.

Students understand the connection.

The administration should too.
