Job Opportunity related to Autism in Athens:

A family in Athens is looking for an undergraduate female student to work with a 15-year-old boy with autism and epilepsy. He is nonverbal but communicates with an iPad. You would learn how to facilitate some therapy (training included), watch their son, and help with some light housework.

Specifically, this semester, they are looking for someone who is available on Wednesdays at around 11:00-3:00 (time is flexible). Opportunities for more hours may also be available throughout the week. Hours and days are flexible and change every semester when your classes change. This April, the White House celebrates the Autistic community by being openly hateful and IGNORANT toward us. And Trump isn't the only one in power who crafts policy using misinformation. If these people talked about any other minority as "a DISEASE to be cured", it would be seen as HATE SPEECH. But until we, as a country, can unlearn all the dangerous myths surrounding Autism, and recognize it as more than a burden, we will live in fear of harmful legislation from uneducated leaders.

This year, however, I got a reminder that while the most powerful man in the country has never wavered from his awful views on autistic people.

One of the biggest contributors to stigma surrounding Autism is how media presents the community to neurotypical audiences. Since its debut in the 1960s, Sesame Street has prepared its younger audiences for the world they'll enter, continuously tackling realities most children's programming are afraid to acknowledge. Now, from the looks of it, we can count on them to portray this character with that same love and nuance.

The newest resident of "Sesame Street" has orange hair and a fondness for her toy rabbit. She also has autism.

Before having a productive dialogue about Autism, we need a foundation of sound reason and factual data. Unscrupulous challenges such as this only prevent that. They simply reiterate baseless claims without validating them, which results in stealing attention from more pressing issues.

When people who are in a position to help do not educate themselves or listen to professionals, they end up creating more harm than good. Share if you agree our leaders should not use their influence to spread misinformation, the myth of a "cure" or stigmas surrounding nuerodiversity.
