Athens Wellbeing Project The purpose of this project is to assist local institutions and nonprofit organizations to make more informed decisions that impact the local community

This needs assessment will be used to inform and empower Local School Governance Teams (LSGTs) with neighborhood-level survey data that may then be used to develop strategic plans for their respective neighborhoods throughout the transition to the charter district structure. Our assessment will provide information that includes, but is not limited to: demographic information, socioeconomic indicat

ors (e.g. income, public assistance received, health insurance, access and providers, and employment status), and indicators in critical "domain" areas. See the 'Neighborhoods' tab for more information.

Meet AWP’s Spring 2026 Intern, Emma! Emma is a Master of Public Health (MPH) student at the University of Georgia, concentrating in Epidemiology. Emma is interested in applying the analytic skills that she has acquired in a variety of intensive academic settings toward addressing the most pressing public health problems of today. Emma is intrigued by the prospect of harnessing available health/wellbeing data to answer new research questions. She wanted to work with because of AWP’s model for community health.
“By collecting and analyzing primary data from Athens-Clarke County households, the initiative is bridging gaps in existing datasets and providing community stakeholders with a more comprehensive understanding of the distinctive needs of Athenians. After learning about how AWP’s systematically collected data has been incorporated into strategic planning, policy decisions, and service delivery, I was eager to join the team. My goal is that my analyses will contribute to the organization’s repository of information on the health needs of Athens-Clarke County and influence further community action.”
Emma loves living in Athens. She loves the fantastic music scene here and the many green spaces Athens has to offer (e.g., Ben Burton, Sandy Creek Nature Center, Bear Hollow).
Welcome to the team, Emma!

Rebanking predatory loans is essential for financial wellbeing. There are no interest caps that companies have to abide by in Georgia— 1 in 12 families have taken out a high interest loan in the last 90 days according to our latest survey data.

Sarah and her team spoke yesterday about how these data have become information to shape the impact investing the community is doing to give families who are caught in predatory debt cycles a second chance.

Project manager Rebecca Baskam is in DC this week for the conference! She’s talking about the most pressing topic our community (and all communities across the country) are facing right now— food security. This work will become an important part of her dissertation, which will help other communities understand how to collect their own data that measures hunger to inform policy, practice, and public health response.
