Join us for “Women’s Experience in the American Revolution,” a talk by Dr. Dee Gillespie. Dr. Gillespie is a Professor of U.S. History at the University of North Georgia.

The American Revolution impacted women living in the British North American colonies, creating new opportunities and bringing hardship to their families and communities.

This talk will discuss both patriot and enslaved women’s experiences as well as how women advocated to be included in the new nation’s vision of equality and liberty.

The event is cohosted by AHS and the Athens-Clarke County Library.

June 7, at 3:00pm in the Appleton Auditorium at the Baxter Street Library (2025 Baxter Street Athens, GA 30606)

Be Part of Athens' Story - Membership Renewal Time Is Here!

https://athenshistorical.org/become-a-member/

As we enter a new year, the Athens Historical Society is excited to continue our mission of preserving, sharing, and celebrating the rich history of our beloved city.

But we can’t do it without YOU!

This March, we’re asking you to renew your membership and help us keep the history of Athens alive for future generations. Your renewal is critical in helping us continue our work throughout the year.

Whether it’s hosting educational programs, creating short films for our local schools, or making history come to life for visitors, your support makes Athens Historical Society possible. Without the support of our membership, we could not provide the programs and publications that, for the past 60 years, have highlighted the unique history of our community. We need your continued support to ensure we can promote research, collect and present historical materials, and disseminate knowledge through these publications and programs.

We also encourage existing members to purchase new memberships at a higher level of support when possible, or to consider purchasing memberships for friends and family. Athens Historical Society memberships make excellent gifts!

Why renew now?

Your support matters: Your membership helps fund important initiatives like the Athens Film Project and our lecture events.

Exclusive benefits: As a member, you'll continue to enjoy a mailed hard copy of our publication, the Athens Historian and access to members-only events, including our Holiday Gathering.

A community of history lovers: Being a member means being part of a passionate group of people dedicated to the preservation of Athens' rich heritage. You’ll be able to connect with fellow history enthusiasts and local experts.

Membership Levels:

Student: $20

Individual: $35

Family: $50

Support: $75

Patron: $150

Business: $250

How to Renew:

Renewing is simple! You can easily renew online at Our Membership Page (link in this post), or by sending a check and your name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address in the envelope to:

The Athens Historical Society, P.O. Box 7745, Athens, GA 30604-7745

Thank You for Your Continued Support!

Thank you again for being part of history in Athens. We value your support and look forward to your renewed membership and active participation in our programs for the coming year.

Together, we can ensure that Athens’ vibrant history is preserved for generations to come. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about our upcoming events, feel free to contact us at [email protected].

Please join us on March 1 at 3:00pm at the Appleton Auditorium at the ACC Library on Baxter Street for our next event.

AHS would like to welcome Dr. Katherine Rohrer, an associate professor of history at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega, to give a talk on her new book, Daughters of Divinity: Evangelical Protestant Christianity and the Making of a New Southern Woman, 1830-1930 (LSU Press, 2025).
She earned her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in history from the University of Georgia. Her research examines the intersections of religion, gender, education, and power in the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American South. Katherine’s scholarship focuses particularly on evangelical Protestantism, women’s religious authority, and the construction of gendered identities in the region. Her first book, Daughters of Divinity: Evangelical Protestant Christianity and the Making of a New Southern Woman, 1830-1930 (LSU Press, 2025), explores these themes. Katherine’s current book project offers a gendered analysis of the Southern Seven Sisters institutions of higher education. She has lived in the Athens area for 25 years.

A short Annual Meeting will also be held prior to the lecture. We welcome all AHS members to attend the meeting to ask questions and meet the Board of Directors.
