The Backpack Project, Inc. The Backpack Project was founded on April 4, 2015 by a team of UGA undergraduates.

is a nonprofit organization that assembles and hand-delivers backpacks filled with food, clothes and toiletries to adults experiencing homelessness. Their intention has been to help the homeless in their local communities of Atlanta and Athens by equipping them with backpacks filled with food, clothes, and toiletries. Both the idea and the organization have since grown, and today The Backpack Proj

ect has a staff of twelve University of Georgia students and a track record of positively impacting the lives of its clients and their communities. We recognize the (in)human element of homelessness, which is why speaking with our clients while personally hand-delivering each backpack is a critical part of our mission. Relationship-building improves their lives and helps us understand their needs, so we can work to connect them with resources and services that can help them achieve a stable living situation and permanently overcome homelessness. Looking forward, we eagerly anticipate building upon our chapter programs at UGA, UofSC, Duke, and GA Tech, expanding our operations in Georgia, and continuing to establish relationships with community and corporate partners so we can provide greater services to the homeless in Atlanta and Athens.

Calling all companies! We are looking for corporate sponsors for our 2026 Homeless Heroes Day! This past year we were able to distribute over 1500 backpacks in the Metro Atlanta area to various shelters. Volunteers were not only able to pack the backpacks, but also see their impact in real time by going to the shelters to drop off the donations. Our 2026 Chapter Charleston Retreat was an incredible trip!

Thank you to Durham, Charleston, and Atlanta for coming and helping make 50 sandwiches and hand out over 100 backpacks to One80 Place.

Excited for what’s to come and to continue to collaborate with all our chapters!

We have had some time to reflect on the impact of Homeless Heroes Day 2025, and are completely blown away by the events success.

Thanks to our volunteers and corporate sponsors, we packed over 1500 backpacks for veterans experiencing homelessness in the Atlanta area. 🎒

None of this would have been possible without all of the hard work and dedication from everyone who attended, and the countless hours spent planning and preparing from our team. Thank you to everyone who participated and we cannot wait for next year!
