A mural of a 19th Century engineer which appeared on the side of a building has been painted over after the owner said they were not asked for permission.
The image of Isambard Kingdom Brunel was done by artist Steve Jenkins on a property on Neath Road in Briton Ferry, Neath Port Talbot, and was funded and unveiled by Neath Port Talbot councillor Gareth Rice earlier this year.
But the owner said no-one had contacted them about the plan and the painting came as a shock.
Brunel, who is described as one of the most “versatile and audacious” engineers of his time, built Briton Ferry Dock to handle coal and goods for the Vale of Neath Railway.

Muralists beware! Make sure you have permission in writing before you put your hard work on the side of a building.

The photographic mural created by our own Glenn Galau, president of Athens Art Association, is finally installed in the Oconee County Library in Wire Park in Watkinsville. Come and visit to view this permanent collection and bravo to Glenn for this lovely and lasting legacy.

This week we will meet at the Lowe’s Garden Center on Lexington in Athens east side. They have lots of beautiful flowers and plants as well as displays of pots and other interesting things to paint. We will paint from 9-11:30 am when we will have our critique.

I had an outdoor venue scheduled for this week, but the weather forecast shows cool temperatures and rain. So we will meet at the botanical gardens this week and paint inside where it is warm and dry. We will make art from 9 AM-11:30 AM with a critique at 11:30.
Afterwords, for anyone who wants to gather for lunch, we can try Mama’s Boy at the Falls for a change of pace. It is an 8” drive from the gardens.

Athens Plein Air will meet Thursday, February 26 in Statham and everyone is welcome to join! No dues or instruction!

Kim Kennedy explains:

Rain is in the forecast for this Thursday, so we will return to Modern South Antiques and Interiors in Statham. Some of you may remember our plein air outing there last year. They open at 11 am, so we will paint from 11am-1pm with our critique immediately afterwards. There are several interesting booths both upstairs and downstairs and lots of great spots outside if the weather should break.

The Mexican restaurant a few doors down is closed for repairs but I am exploring other lunch options. The owner of the store tells me that she has a cafe, so that might work.

I stopped by the botanical gardens this week and saw the daffodils are beginning to come out. They are particularly pretty along the entrance drive where we have painted in prior years. The daffodils blossoms are most plentiful about .2 mi from the Botanical Garden entrance off Milledge on the entrance drive, near the William Bartram Trail sign. You can park along the driveway (be sure to pull all the way off the road) wherever you find your perfect spot. Of course, anyone who wishes to paint in the main garden can do so. We can make art from 9-11:30am, with our critique near the William Bartram Trail Sign. Lunch at noon for those who wish to partake at Peppino’s. The weather report looks promising for Thursday with warmer temperatures and sunshine that should make for great conditions for outdoor painting/drawing.
