A group of nuns in Spain is quietly doing something incredible.
At a convent in Castile-La Mancha, 11 sisters have taken on the mission of saving a rare breed of Spanish giant rabbits — some weighing up to 20 pounds — from disappearing entirely.
The sisters have been caring for the rabbits for more than 30 years, but after learning the breed was at risk, they shifted their focus to full-on conservation. Now, they’re raising, monitoring, and protecting dozens of rabbits while working to rebuild the population.
“We contacted an association… I sent some photos, and they told me, ‘You have a spectacular animal, and it's endangered,’” one sister shared.
Because they can’t sell the rabbits, they donate them to schools and breeders to help grow their numbers — and fund the entire effort by selling homemade candy and ice cream.
“We have to protect creation,” she added. “We are Franciscans… that is the source of the love and admiration we feel for the Spanish giant rabbit.”
It’s a labor of love — and a race to make sure this unique breed doesn’t disappear.
