From Rhonda: Today was my final day working for the Learn to Read Programs. I cannot even think of how to put 33 years in one post. Perhaps I will share more pictures later, but I do want to thank everyone who has been supportive of our non-profit, with any type and amount of donation, grant, time, encouragement, influence, advice, and kind words. You helped not only our wonderful students and tutors, but the office staff's morale as well. There is definitely a mixture of emotions this evening, but I know it's time. And I'm not leaving for good. I plan to volunteer as a tutor for the Family Resource Center, which is now the organization doing a superb job in handling all the LTR programs. Please consider tutoring, but other volunteer opportunities serving the many community programs they sponsor are available. So my last day-a new chapter has begun! And I will be back to tutor in the morning.

The Learn to Read Council programs are now under the Athens Limestone County Family Resource umbrella. LTR Director Rhonda Andrews had been trying to retire from that position, but previous attempts to hire a replacement did not pan out. After hearing so many good things about Family Resource Center and its director, we thought LTR might be a good fit and they agreed. The LTR board has officially signed the documents. Emmett Moore, ALCFRC Director, and Rhonda Andrews, former LTR Director, are working together to make as smooth an acquisition as possible. The computer lab supervisor retired last year so Rhonda is in that role at present to build the lab back up for the students and help as needed with the transition. Rhonda is pictured presenting a donation to Emmett for LTR programs. She would like to encourage all LTR former board members, tutors, students, friends, family, and the community to show their support to ALCFRC. Make a donation to sponsor the reading programs or any of the other eight programs that the center provides. Contact them at 256-230-0880 for more information.

Many changes are happening at LTR. Shelia Alsup, supervisor for the children’s programs, recently retired and was honored, along with the students and tutors of the Summer Youth Literacy Program, at the celebration party. It was a wonderful evening in the Ballroom of Athens State University, who so graciously allowed us to use their facilities. SYLP supervisors Tanya Coleman and Shae McCaffrey, along with their amazing crew from Family Resources Center, did an outstanding job with food and decorations. We appreciate all the students, family members, and tutors who came to enjoy the festivities, and wish all our hard-working students a successful school year!

And that’s a wrap-last meeting of the Learn to Read Council today at 1 p.m. Pictured left to right: Beverly Toney, Ola Steele on Zoom-the tablet; Hazel White on phone not pictured, Ann Margaret Chapman, and taking the pic, former director Rhonda Andrews. Our programs will now be under the umbrella of the Family Resource Center. More to come on that later but we are asking our LTR friends to support FRC in this move. They have been most welcoming! And Rhonda will continue for a while as the Computer Lab Supervisor. So call-our number is currently still the same 256-230-3050.
