My name is Doug “R@T” Brooks and I am a founding member of AAMP.

It is hard to believe that it has been over 20 years since this whole thing started.

The goal was simple, to give away guitars and lessons to kids that could not afford it.

Over those 20+ years our organization has evolved. We have changed our name a few times, different community members have served on our board, we became a 501C3 non-profit, and we have expanded our mission to include all sorts of arts.

However, at the core our purpose has remained the same, to help support the arts and art education in and around Athens County, Ohio.

In that time we have supported dozens of individuals with grants worth tens of thousands of dollars. As awareness of our organziation has grown we have found that the need for funding for the arts is immense.

We received more requests for funding in 2025 than any other year of our existence.

By the number of requests we have received so far in 2026, that number could go even higher.

Thank you to the Athens Artist Memorial Project - AAMP for your generous support of programming at the Community Makerspace!

The AAMP provides music and art opportunities to folks in our area by honoring local artists who have passed away by continuing their legacy through community support.

These funds will be used to purchase supplies and equipment for classes and our community workspaces, helping us continue to provide a welcoming space where all members of our community can come together to share skills, learn, gather, and create.

Last month, our friend Kathleen donated two truly wonderful guitars to our organization, with one simple hope: that they’ll find their way into someone’s home—and into someone’s hands—in the new year.

She has experienced more instability in her young life than most of us could imagine. Now in a more supportive home environment, she’s surrounded by family working hard to give her the foundation she deserves.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are funding 10 weeks of private guitar lessons with a locally trained musician.
