As Kansas Territory opened for settlement, people from across the country traveled here to help decide the future of the region.

Attached is a photo of a building in Atchison from 1860, when the town was still in its early years as a growing Missouri River community.

More than 160 years later, the community still gathers along these same streets and riverfront as we celebrate America 250 this July 4.

In the mid-1800s, steamboats brought travelers, supplies, and opportunity through Atchison as thousands of settlers moved west toward places like Oregon, California, and Santa Fe.

Long before highways and interstates, the Missouri River made Atchison an important stop for travelers heading west.

Today, the river remains part of life in Atchison from fishing and boating to riverfront views enjoyed by locals and visitors during celebrations like America 250 this July 4.

Near modern-day Doniphan was once the capital village of the Kanza tribe. When Lewis and Clark traveled through the region in 1804, most of the tribe had left the village on a hunting expedition at that time.

The Missouri River region has long been a place of movement, exploration, and community shaping the history of northeast Kansas for generations.

This July 4, Atchison will celebrate America 250 with events, activities, and community gatherings throughout town as we reflect on the many stories connected to our nation’s history.
