A man connected to Atchison is sometimes called the “One Day President.”
David Rice Atchison, the town’s namesake, is often said to have technically served as acting president for a single day in 1849 during a gap between presidential terms.

Legend says he slept through the entire thing.

Today, stories like these remain part of the unique history connected to Atchison as communities across the country prepare to celebrate America 250 this July 4.
