The Astoria Civic Association was originally conceived by a group of concerned Astoria residents in 1928, and formally chartered by the State of New York on October 9, 1933 under the leadership of the late Judge Charles J. He continued to serve the community until his death in 1967. Vallone founded the Judge Charles J. Vallone Scholarship Fund in his memory which has grown to one of the largest pr
ivate scholarships in the State. In addition to awarding scholarships totaling $436,950, the Astoria Civic Association has involved itself with forming the Astoria Restoration Association, Friends of Astoria Park, The Greater Astoria Historical Society, Graffiti/Crime Watchers and sponsored Health Fairs and annual baseball, football, touch football teams, Girl Scout troops and over twenty-seven consecutive Bike Races. Now under the leadership of Executive Director and former New York City Council Speaker Peter F. Vallone, Sr., the Astoria Civic Association has never been stronger. The main asset of the Association has always been, and continues to be, the dedication and high quality of its members, many of whom also represent other neighborhood associations, clubs and institutions, all of whom deserve the highest praise for giving of themselves to the community, working together for the common good of all. After 80 years, the Astoria Civic Association is still the preeminent community organization in Western Queens and continues to represent the best interest of its citizens.
