Thane Tienson, a renowned environmental lawyer, admired throughout the Pacific Northwest, and remembered for his unfailing generosity, superb storytelling and indelible courage, died suddenly and tragically of a heart attack Jan. 28, 2021 in transit to Portland's Legacy Emanuel Hospital for surgery.

Born in Astoria, Ore., to Dorothy and John Tienson, he was the eldest of four sons. He attended Astoria public schools until the family moved to the Bay Area in 1960.

He returned to Oregon to attend law school at Lewis & Clark and began a legal career of over four decades, much of them spent doing pro bono work for grateful clients. Thane was an environmental champion and won many noteworthy battles including a federal court ruling requiring sweeping changes in the way dams are operated to protect Pacific Northwest salmon, and his lasting contribution to the court's decision to allow the John Day River to be owned by the people of Oregon.

He identified by heritage and politics with the Finns and Scandinavians who came by the thousands to Astoria to fish and log before and after 1900. He worked tirelessly with public officials and private citizens, alongside his friend, Jordan Schnitzer, to restore the Astoria Column.
