Ocean temperatures continue to be record-breaking in 2024. The average global sea surface temperature has surpassed record-breaking 21°C (69.8°F) for more than 90 consecutive days since late January. Temperatures this high were only seen in August last year for less than a week.
As the early morning sun rises over the Great Barrier Reef, its light pierces the turquoise waters of a shallow lagoon, bringing more than a dozen turtles to life.
