Flowers on the wild blue flax plant bloom for just one day: they open in the morning, and their petals close and drop by late afternoon. Carpe diem, indeed!

Fairy trumpets are not only one of our most flamboyant flowers, they have fascinating life cycles. Like monument plants and old-men-of-the-mountain, they are monocarpic; that is, they store up nutrients through their leaves and roots for a half-dozen or so years, bloom once, then die. They also are one of the few local plants that can bloom in either early or late summer, depending on conditions (especially late summer rain).
