Thank you to the 50+ Reese Henry employees and community volunteers who came out to remove fallen trees blocking the Lost Man Trail, to patch and repair the summit overlook trail, to fix steps and clear trails at the Grottos, to redo benches and pull rebar, to plant native seeds at weed-infested, human-impacted places, to stabilize and improve climbing trails, and generally take care of Independence Pass. It’s official: a green gentian (aka monument plant) SUPERBLOOM is underway! Four years ago, we had a wet July and August, creating the conditions for hundreds of these plants to bloom together this summer, a phenomenon known as “masting.” A green gentian stores up nutrients through its leaves and roots for decades before shooting up a stalk as tall as six feet covered in gorgeous white flowers. The plant will die after blooming, so enjoy the show!
