The Mayor of Ashville, Alabama: ROBERT MCKAY proclaimed the 18th day of October 2013 and the third Friday in October, hereafter as BREAST CANCER AWARENESS DAY in the City of Ashville. Proclamation For 2013 Breast Cancer Awareness Day
WHEREAS, October 2013 is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, October 18, 2013 is Breast Cancer Awareness Day; and the third Friday in O
ctober hereafter;
WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, except for skin cancer;
WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer;
WHEREAS, the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a womanβs life is about 1 in 8;
WHEREAS, almost 232,340 new cases of invasive female breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2013 and about 39,620 will die from the disease; and
WHEREAS, African American women are more likely to die from breast cancer than women of all other races;
WHEREAS, an estimated 2,240 cases of male breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2013 and about 450 men will die of the disease; and
WHEREAS, death rates from breast cancer have been declining, and this change is believed to be the result of earlier detection and improved treatment; and
WHEREAS, mammography--an βx-rayβ of the breast--is recognized as the single most effective method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt;
NOW, THEREFORE, I ROBERT MCKAY, Mayor of the City of ASHVILLE,
do hereby proclaim the 18th day of October 2013 and the third Friday in October, hereafter as BREAST CANCER AWARENESS DAY in the City of Ashville.
