Hatch Magazine's recent article discusses snow drought across the West and what that means.

"The overarching message that really needs to sink in? Rain is great. But it’s not snow. Snow is the wellspring of almost every single Western river. So, while some areas of the West are happily reporting higher-than-normal precipitation numbers, the data that counts is the water that’s stored as snow along the spine of the Rockies. And that data is downright depressing — 67 weather stations in the West are reporting their warmest December, January, and February on record."

As of March 25, 2026 (Map credit: NRCS).

Last week, Trout in the Classroom students learned about protective coloration. Jasper Davis (HFF's Communications and Outreach Manager) gave a lesson on the different types of camouflage. Afterwards, the students were able to receive a sugar cookie in the shape of a trout and a napkin that had a colorful pattern on it. The goal was to camouflage their trout cookies to blend in with their napkin, and they did a great job!

Water Report • March 2026📍Henry's Fork Watershed (eastern Idaho)

🌡March was 12*F warmer than average and the warmest March in the 38-year record.
❄️Snowpack in the Henry's Fork watershed peaked 27 days early on March 16 at 33% below average.
☀️Due to warm temps, our meager snowpack is already melting and only 76% remains on the ground.
🌊Island Park Reservoir is 87% full and streamflow in Box Canyon is 398 cfs.
🧊Ice melted from Island Park Reservoir on March 31, the earliest in the 2015-2026 record. Early ice-off means a longer growing period for algae in the reservoir, which is bad news for water quality come late June.
🐟With a warm winter comes earlier hatches and better fish condition.

Snow is key to water supply in the Henry's Fork watershed and Snake River headwaters. As part of a USBR WaterSMART-funded project in partnership with Trout Unlimited and Boise State University, Dr. Otto Lang spent the winter keeping tabs on the region's snow story.

Learn about why snow matters, what Otto observed this winter, and his plans for the summer ahead on the HFF Blog 👉henrysfork.org/post/monitoring-the-upper-snake-snowpack-updates-from-the-field/
