Shamokin Firsts - this newspaper ad published by Yoch's bakery in Nov. 1942 recalls the first coal mine opened in Shamokin. In 1826, John C. Boyd and Ziba Bird built a dam in Shamokin Creek north of Webster St. and opened a mine in the creek bed. Assisted by John Runkle and young Joseph Bird, the coal was wheeled to the creek bank on a plank then loaded into wagons. Casper Reed and Samuel Startzel were hired to haul the coal to Boyd's Farm (Boyd's Station) near Danville. With the dirt roads and hills to cross, they could only make 4 trips per week. It took them two months to accumulate 50 tons of coal at Boyd's Farm. The coal was then loaded onto "arks" on the Susquehanna River and floated downstream for sale.

We'll be there! We have a long history at Avondale and have organized many of the early Commemorations at the site in partnership with the PHS and many others.
