The Hanover County Black Heritage Society, INC. The Society was created by a group of volunteers under the leadership of Carolyn Hemphill in 1992 and was incorporated in 1994.

At the time of the Society’s creation, documentation of the county’s African American history was not readily accessible to the public or in one central location.
