In 1958, the women of Ashland College’s Women’s Athletic Association (W.A.A.) were doing more than playing sports—they were helping build a tradition of women’s athletics on campus.

The W.A.A. promoted interest in sports among college women, with members participating in field hockey, bowling, basketball, softball and other recreational activities. But their impact went well beyond the playing field. They sponsored an all-college roller-skating party, created a float for Homecoming, sold Ashland College jackets and football programs, and represented Ashland at play-days at Kent State and Youngstown State.

And the highlight of the year? The annual Louie-Louise All-Star Basketball Game. 🏀

These women were athletes, leaders and active members of the Ashland community—and in doing so, they helped pave the way for generations of women to come. 💜🦅💛

Throwback Thursday: Before the Eagle, there was a Goat! 🐐

Long before the Eagle became Ashland College’s mascot, students had a tradition involving a toy goat named Billie (or Little William).

Beginning in 1915, the goat became the center of a campus-wide game of steal, hide and pass it on between classes. Students went to some pretty creative lengths to keep Billie away from their rivals—including hiding the goat in bank vaults, attics, cellars, chimneys and even sending it beyond Ohio!

This photo captures a piece of that early Ashland tradition. Did you know the Goat came before the Eagle?
