Kentucky People's Union

Kentucky People's Union Similar to a labor union, we organize to build the power of everyday people in our community. We know that folks are having a hard time on so many issues.

Ashland, Kentucky is our home base because of its awesome and resilient people and the deep history of labor organizing and multiracial solidarity in Appalachia. Our hope is that in conversations with our community we can identify those issues across neighborhoods, cities, and the entire commonwealth. We can use that knowledge to hold those with power: whether it be landlords, industries, or politicians- accountable to us - the people who give them their power and position.

Strikes continue at Delaney Hall. People are fighting detention warehouses being built in their cities. Candidates all over the country who are anti-ICE are winning their primaries. Abolish ICE. Our love for each other won't be dimmed.

Kentucky People's Union is offering endorsement to Ashland city commissioner candidates.
Through a process of listening to the people of Ashland about their needs that are not being met by the city and a democratic organization vote on our platform, we have created a questionnaire that we have sent to each commissioner candidate running in this years Primary Election.
We need a candidate who will listen to and work for and with the members of our community. We need leaders in this city who want to bring real, material change for us.
These are the questions we asked:

1. From July 2024-July 2025, Boyd County had the highest per capita citations under KRS 511.110. This law criminalizes “street camping,” meaning police are issuing citations to people simply for being homeless. According to one citation record from Ashland, “I responded to the Central Park bandstand area after Parks Dept employees reported numerous individuals sleeping in the bandstand. I arrived on scene and found the listed person asleep under a blanket. This area has not been designated for the purpose of sleeping or camping and the individual does not have authorization to sleep there. The individual claims he is homeless with no permanent address.” What is your plan to address the homelessness crisis and reduce the number of people Ashland is citing for street camping?
2. Rents continue to rise while renters face unsafe and low quality conditions. 22.4% of people in Ashland live in poverty while median rent is $872, meaning that an individual living below the poverty line would need to pay more than ⅔ of their income to rent. What is your plan for ensuring housing in Ashland is affordable for low-income people, and for protecting renters against abuse from landlords? Would you support implementing the Uniform Residential Landlord Tenant Act (URLTA)?
3. Only 18% of people in America report having a “great deal” of trust in their local government. How will you ensure Ashland city government is transparent, especially for working class people? How will you ensure ordinary people are aware of what their government is working on, and are consulted about the decisions that will impact their lives?
4. What are your plans to improve Ashland’s infrastructure? For example, we have heard from several people with disabilities about downtown Ashland being difficult to navigate. How would you ensure that downtown is more accessible to people with disabilities? What other infrastructure improvements would you make?

We look forward to the possibility of endorsing a candidate who is aligned with our values of building power for everyday poor and working class people in Ashland!
