Our speaker last week was Philip Stewart, President and co-owner of the Greater Ashland Beacon, a local newspaper based here in Ashland with circulation on Tuesdays that can be picked up for free at over 40 locations.

Phil has been in the paper business now for 13 years and wanted the paper to focus on local positive human interest stories instead of national, divisive or salacious articles. This strategy must be working - they have between 40K to 50K views on their website each month and have over 2 million engagements on Facebook each year.

One of the challenges that Phil spoke about was getting the paper printed. Just since 2021, the state of Ky has went from 50 presses to only having 9 presses. It's getting harder and harder to find & keep a press that can print in color.

Phil is very proud of the accolades accomplished by the paper and staff. Since becoming a member of the Ky Press Association, they have regularly received honors as the #2 Weekly in the state. But, this last year, they were named the #1 Weekly Newspaper in the state, along with many other #1's - Photographer of the Year, Best Sports Photos and Best Collage. They regularly place more than once in the same category and have even swept entire categories.

We appreciate Philip coming and hanging out with us and eating pizza and telling us about all the great articles, awards and things happening down at the Freakin' Beacon.

Our speakers last week were Jerry and Doris Johnson who just opened up the Heritage Art Gallery at 1520 Wi******er Ave. They have the first Black-owned gallery in the city's history. Regular hours for the gallery will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and closed Sunday and Monday.

Jerry has been a professional artist for more than 50 years and has been a cartoonist for Walt Disney and the Navy Times and also taught at Ohio University. Jerry has been featured at the Highlands Museum and at the new Black History Museum in Ashland.

Jerry is a self-taught painter and his works are mostly acrylic, focusing on African themes and Black celebrities. He won’t paint at the gallery; he said he has his studio at his home and is more comfortable painting there. His wife, Doris, will operate the gallery.

While his own work will be displayed and for sale, he said he hopes to also include work by other artists. He said he will help promote their work and take a commission, but he hasn’t decided his rate yet.

Jerry is a former student of Booker T. Washington School. He, along with assistance provided by the Ohio University Southern art department, painted the Booker T. Washington School Mural located on the Port of Ashland floodwall behind the Ashland Transportation Center. It depicts the school building and honors the legacy of the schools principal, C.B. Nuckolls, and the full-time curriculum faculty.

We appreciate Jerry and Doris coming in to talk to us about the new art gallery and their passion for art.

Our speakers last week were Steve Alley (Fire Chief of the Ashland Fire Department) and Brad Maggard (Fire Marshall of the Ashland Fire Department.

Steve gave us an overview of the Fire Department and what they've been up to. The Ashland Fire Department is made up of 52 members spread across three Fire Stations (Main in Downtown Ashland, Normal on US23 and South on 29th Street). Just this last year they responded to over 2,200 calls. And these calls range from fires to overdoses to alarms and a myriad of other related issues.

While the Fire Department receives great support from the City and the Board of Commissioners, equipment is expensive and they spend quite a bit searching out grants to help pay for equipment. In just the last year, they have received more than $1.4mil in grants. Additionally, the city supported purchasing a second set of fire/chemical gear so they didn't have to re-wear contaminated gear on multiple calls as that's been determined to be a health hazard.

Another program that will be funded by grants is a program that will be administered by Ramey-Regroup. That program will focus on the mental and physical health of the firefighters. We know they experience some pretty stressful and traumatic experiences that can have long lasting affects. It's good to see this kind of investment that will create more resilient and healthy firefighters.

Brad then stepped in to highlight "Fire Prevention Week" and "Fire Awareness Month" and what they are focusing on this year. Cooking Fires is the "hot" topic this year and seems to be the cause of an awful lot of incidents. It doesn't take much in the "heat" of the moment to use the wrong thing to put out a kitchen fire and cause even more destruction. Of course, many of the incidents could be prevented and that's the first step to preventing these types of fires. The other thing is to know exactly what to do based on the type of fire. Brad said his go-to is "put a lid on it". That will generally reduce the spread and risk.

Another program Brad highlighted was the "Smoke Alarm Installation" program that is grant funded. If you need Smoke Alarms, the Fire Department can come out and install those free of charge. That's a really great service to ensure that you have the best warning.

We appreciate Steve and Brad coming in to talk to us during "Fire Prevention Week" and "Fire Awareness Month". What they shared is sure to make us a little safer.

Our speaker last week was Leslie Vincent - an appraiser, business owner (LMV Appraisals), past president of Kiwanis, daughter of member Judy Robinson and current president for Friends of the Children.

Friends of the Children is a local 501c(3) non-profit charitable organization comprised of 40 members. They are the oldest continually running non-profit organization in the city of Ashland (120 years old this year). They exist to provide new clothing for children in the Ashland Independent School District whose families stand in greatest financial need.

The organization is funded 100% by their generous patrons. All operating costs are absorbed by their members through annual dues, therefore 100% of all donations go directly toward clothing costs. They operate mostly from September to December each year and work closely with our local JC Penney (you can round up your purchase and donate) who provides discounts and grants.

Each child in need is identified through the local schools Family Resource Centers and receive new clothing from head to toe at our local JC Penney store. During a shopping trip with FOC and Family Resource personnel, a student will choose: 2 tops, 2 bottoms, a package of underwear, a package of socks, other needed undergarments, an outer garment for cold weather, and a pair of name brand shoes.

They spend about $150-$175 on each elementary student and $175-$200 on each middle/high school student. This last year, they clothed 314 students (197 elementary / 117 middle/high) and spent over $42,000.

If you'd like to find out more, would like to volunteer or would like to donate, check them out at - https://friendsofthechildrenashland.com/

We appreciate Leslie coming in on a last-minute request to share with us the important work they are doing and to remind us of how we can make a difference in our community.
