The words you choose to use to describe someone struggling with addiction can directly contribute to the stigma that causes many struggling to be unwilling to reach out for help. One of the most impactful things you can do to support a person struggling with addiction is choose your words and descriptions carefully. Avoid using words like "addict" or "clean" and try using phrases like "a person struggling with substance misuse" and "in recovery" or "substance-free."

It is important during National Recovery Month to break the stigmas surrounding substance abuse. Not every story is the same, and it is important to listen without judgement. Stigmatizing these issues can further prevent those struggling from reaching out for recovery resources. Hanover Cares is dedicated to breaking the stigma in hopes of supporting those currently struggling with substance abuse, those recovering, and for our future youth.

Today marks International Overdose Awareness day as it’s 25th year in recognition. This day, and entire month, honors the lives who have been lost to overdose, and prevention efforts to promote recovery. Let us use this day as a chance to educate ourselves and promote understanding to de-stigmatize substance abuse, so that those struggling can get the support they deserve. Remember, overdose is preventable 💜
