Which moths live on Eight Dollar Mountain? Lepidopterist Dana Ross is helping us understand the moth biodiversity of Cobra-lily Springs. Dana and a SOLC staff member spent a recent evening into the morning at our newest preserve catching moths and met a lot of special creatures including wasps, beetles, and spiders. Watch for our community moth night at Rogue River Preserve in July to learn more.

As temperatures warm in southern Oregon and northern California, everything and everyone is coming back to life. 🌱

If you spend time in Lithia Park in Ashland or paddle up at Acorn Woman Lake, you may have noticed that our native western pond turtles are out and about, basking in the sunshine on rocks and logs. 🐢 Late spring is an important time for the turtles -- they are coming out of their overwintering season, heading back to aquatic habitats to bask and feed, and mama turtles are nesting. So that means they're on the move! And they may find themselves in need of your help.

If you come across a turtle away from a waterbody and it seems out of place, ask yourself these questions:

➡️ Is it on a roadway or bike path where it may be hit by moving vehicles? If that's the case, move it in the direction it's already going across the road and out of immediate danger.

➡️ Does the turtle appear injured? if so, call ODFW at (541) 826-8774.

If your answer to both of these questions is "no" and it doesn't seem in any other immediate danger, let it be! Turtles know where they're going and it's likely on its way to water or a nesting site.

We and the turtles thank YOU for being great stewards to our natural world! 🐢
