🇺🇸Mary Ruell Award Recipient🇺🇸

Phylliss Reitsma is this year’s recipient of the Mary Ruell Award. This annual honor recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to Ashland. Since moving to Ashland in 1984, Phylliss has generously volunteered with many local organizations. She served as president of both the American Legion Auxiliary Durant-Haley #66 and Mt. Prospect VFW, and currently serves with the Dupuis-Cross Auxiliary. A long-time member Board of Directors for the Ashland Community Center, she also volunteered there for years helping to run the thrift shop and the food bank. Through the Community Center she was instrumental in orchestrating the Christmas Night in Ashland and Town-Wide Yard Sale events. She is active in the Ashland Woman’s Club, Ashland Historical Society, and Ashland Fourth of July. For as long as she was able, she assisted her neighbors on Highland Street with their shopping, laundry, getting their mail, and check-ins.

Phylliss says that she is committed to help people in Ashland for a very good reason: “To give back to the town that gave to me in my time of need.”

Congratulations, Phylliss!

🇺🇸Meet our Grand Marshal🇺🇸
🔹The Ashland Woman's Club - (AWC) is thrilled to celebrate its 100-year anniversary in 2026 and to serve as this year’s Grand Marshal of the parade. Founded in 1926 by Mrs. Lula Morrison, the club has been an enduring and active presence in the Ashland community for a full century.
🔹Throughout its history, the AWC has brought together women committed to service, friendship, and civic engagement. Members meet monthly and work year-round to support local initiatives that benefit residents of all ages. The club proudly contributes to nonprofit organizations, sponsors its cherished Books for Newborns program, and provides college scholarships to Ashland graduates, helping invest in the community’s future.
🔹AWC members raise funds through a variety of well-loved events, including bake sales, craft fairs, and the annual Breakfast with Santa, hosted by the Ashland Common Man Restaurant. These gatherings not only support important causes but also bring the community together in meaningful ways.
🔹As the Ashland Woman’s Club reaches this remarkable milestone, its role as Grand Marshal is a fitting tribute to 100 years of dedication, generosity, and community spirit. The club’s legacy continues to shine through the lives it touches and the traditions it helps sustain in Ashland.
