Have you ever seen a really quick turkey?

Did you know that turkeys are surprisingly fast?

It may be counter intuitive when you see a group of them strutting around in a farm field, but wild turkeys are actually very fast. To avoid predators, turkeys can run at speeds of 22-25 mph for short spurts, and they can fly as fast as 50 mph. While these birds are swift, they are built more like sprinters than marathon runners.

Thanks to strong leg muscles, long toes and a stable stride, turkeys possess a very efficient gait that provides them significant speed while running. Utilizing highly adapted leg muscles and tendons that absorb and release energy while running, turkeys accelerate quickly to keep themselves safe.

In addition, their wing anatomy wasn’t designed for flying long distances but is more than sufficient to get them into trees to escape threats… or just to roost for the night. They can easily reach heights of 50 feet. Their wings also allow them to glide significant distances to further get them out of harms way.
