Last week we were joined by students in the Lake Superior Elementary Lake Superior Learning Community (LSLC), who helped us seed manoomin beneath our domes and tested water quality around our seeding area with chemistry kits and macroinvertebrate collection. With the bird migration still underway, we’re waiting to seed the remaining manoomin, but we are thrilled to see the first seeds planted – and by the next generation. Miigwech to all the students, teachers, and chaperones who made this special day possible!

There has been much activity and discussion around the Line 5 Reroute lately. Superior Rivers staff is working on some maps to help orient our membership to where the spills, frack outs, and potential aquifer breach occurred in our watersheds. Stay tuned!

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says it's unclear whether an aquifer breach occurred on Enbridge's $1 billion project to reroute its Line 5 oil and gas pipeline in northern Wisconsin.

Thanks to all the volunteers who came out to help us create manoomin protection domes with artist and educator Sara Alsum-Wassenaar from Grand Valley State University in Michigan. Special thanks to the UW Stevens Point students and professors that came to help us out. It was a beautiful day to cut and weave and use cattails in a creative way. We can't wait to see them out on the slough protecting manoomin seed!

The Manoomin Marsh Project explores the intersection of ecological restoration, community engagement, and collaborative design, with a growing focus on how protection efforts have evolved into broader strategies for improving water quality.

Join us for a lecture from educator and artist Sara Alsum-Wassenaa that traces the project’s evolution, the successes and setbacks encountered along the way, and how design, engineering, and collaborative making can strengthen both ecological restoration and the relationships among people that long-term watershed stewardship depends upon.

Thank you so much to all of the volunteers who came out to help us remove cattail from the Fish Creek Slough. We had a beautiful weekend seeing community restoration in action! We had 30 plus people out in Prentice Park cutting, hauling, and loading cattail. Altogether we were able to remove 13 cubic yards of cattail biomass – that’s about the size of a large dump truck!!

Most of that cattail has been transported to Big Lake Organics for compost, the rest have been made into cordage or woven into mats. We've got manoomin seed ready for planting in the space that was made by all of the volunteers' hard work. This has been a long time coming and we couldn't be more grateful for the weekend we had and the people who made it possible. The work isn't done, but this weekend made us hopeful and excited for all the work to come!
