For some OHRA guests, the path toward stability means more than finding a safe place to stay, it means finding a way to get somewhere they can call home.

Brooke P. became a guest at OHRA in May. During her stay, she discovered she was pregnant and began thinking about what she needed next. She wanted to return to her mother, who could provide a safe place to stay and support her as she prepared for her baby.

Through OHRA’s partnership with the Homeward Bound Program, Brooke was able to make that journey possible.

“Thanks to OHRA and the Homeward Bound program, I am flying home tomorrow to live with my mother,” Brooke shared. “While at OHRA I was able to get services I needed and even help with some legal issues. OHRA helped me stay safe. Thank you!”

Homeward Bound provides funding to help people experiencing homelessness—or people fleeing domestic violence—travel to a safe and stable home. The destination doesn’t have to be a person’s original hometown. What matters is that someone is waiting for them on the other end and that there is a stable place for them to stay and a plan for their next steps.

For Brooke, that meant a flight home, a safe place to land, and the support of her mother as she begins a new chapter. It’s a reminder that sometimes helping someone move toward stability means helping them find their way home.

Love Dogs? Rogue Valley Street Dogs sure does (and cats too)!

As one of our community partners, Rogue Valley Street Dogs visits OHRA to provide care, supplies, and plenty of love to the pets who live here or visit here with their people.

For many people experiencing homelessness, pets are much more than companions. They provide emotional support, companionship, and a sense of security. OHRA is proud to be a shelter where guests can stay with their dogs, helping people maintain an important relationship that can be a source of comfort and stability during a difficult time.

Rogue Valley Street Dogs helps make that possible by providing vaccines, spay and neuter services, food, toys, treats and other essential support for pets and their people. Serving the Rogue Valley since 2013, their mission is to improve the lives of pets living in poverty. In 2025 alone, they reached more than 1,000 people through their outreach events.

We are grateful to Rogue Valley Street Dogs for the care they provide to our guests and their best friends, and for being such an important part of the OHRA community! For more, visit them at https://roguevalleystreetdogs.org/

Cynthia Solis works in housekeeping at OHRA, but her role goes far beyond keeping rooms clean. She is a familiar and caring presence for our guests and shelter staff, always ready to lend a hand and do whatever she can to make sure guests feel welcomed and cared for during their stay.

Cynthia joined OHRA more than a year ago after seeing a job posting online. She was excited to become part of OHRA because, as she puts it, the environment feels like a family—with everyone working together to help guests move toward better lives.

Cynthia believes that OHRA is a very reliable organization for the community it serves. We are grateful to her for the care she brings to her work every day and for the role she plays in making OHRA feel like a welcoming place for our guests.

Volunteers have always been at the heart of OHRA, and there are many ways to get involved. We’re currently looking for Coffee & Friends volunteers to serve coffee and breakfast treats on Tuesday or Thursday mornings, treat providers to bake or purchase breakfast treats, Mail Service volunteers to help sort guest mail 1–3 hours each week, and members of OHRA Corps to participate in community service projects throughout Ashland.

We’re also seeking skilled painters to refresh guest rooms between stays and a volunteer barber to provide haircuts during Laundry Shower Trailer hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Whether you have an hour a week, a special skill, or simply a desire to help, there’s a place for you at OHRA. To learn more, visit OHRA’s volunteer page. https://ohrahelps.org/volunteer/

Albert joined the team in January 2026, beginning at the 4-month Winter Shelter before accepting a permanent position as shelter staff at OHRA.

Every day, he brings compassion, encouragement, and lived experience to his work, helping guests feel seen, supported, and hopeful.

Albert is proud to share that he is three years clean and sober. Having experienced both homelessness and addiction, which he says, shows that no matter what a person is going through, there is hope to make life better for themselves. He understands many of the challenges our guests face. By sharing his own journey, Albert reminds others that recovery and stability are possible and that there is hope for anyone ready to take the next step toward a better future.

When he's not at work, Albert enjoys camping, spending time in the woods, and exploring new places. We are grateful to have him on the OHRA team, where his resilience, empathy, and commitment make a meaningful difference in the lives of our guests every day.

Each month we hope to share a story from one of our guests. This month Matt shares about his experience of staying at OHRA.

"I was so happy to be here at OHRA, the rooms are so nice, and my window view was amazing for seeing the trees and woodpeckers each morning. The staff are all very respectful and kind. I also enjoyed taking the RentWell class; I have learned a lot from it and am glad I graduated. There are so many positives about OHRA, and I am glad it's here to help people like me. Thank you for letting me stay here and for the peace of mind."

Matt's story is possible because of a caring community like ours. Thank you for helping us provide safety, stability, and hope to neighbors when they need it most.

Did You Know?

Among the many things that OHRA provides our guests is mail services! Individuals and families who experience homelessness may lose access to a permanent postal address, and that loss hinders sending and receiving important documents, including income.

OHRA volunteers sort and distribute mail each week to help ensure that our guests have access to packages, mail, and even medicines.
