"Did You Know This Exists in Virginia?"

Many autism families are asking the same question:

"What happens when my child becomes an adult?"

One thing I’m learning through this journey is that many families do not realize Virginia already has programs connected to:
✔ Independent living support
✔ Housing assistance opportunities
✔ Accessibility modifications
✔ Developmental disability waiver services
✔ Community-based supports

Housing is more than a roof over someone’s head.

It can mean:
💙 Stability
💙 Safety
💙 Routine
💙 Independence

Families should not wait until age 18 to start planning.

The earlier we understand resources and options, the more opportunities we create for our children’s future.

This is exactly why Autism Housing & Independence (AHI) exists.

📲 Question for parents and caregivers:
What is your biggest concern right now?
🔘 Housing options
🔘 Independence skills
🔘 Government resources
🔘 Safety
🔘 Future planning
🔘 Financial concerns

💙 Day 30: This Is Just the Beginning-Autism Awareness Month- April 2026

Why I Started Autism Housing & Independence

As we close out Autism Awareness Month, I want to take a moment to share something from the heart.

Because this journey…
👉 was never just about posting for 30 days.

"The Reason Behind This Mission". Autism Housing & Independence didn’t start as a business idea. It started as a need.

As a parent, I found myself asking the same questions so many families ask:

*What will my child’s future look like?

*Where will they live?

*Will they be safe?

*Will they be able to live independently?

And the hardest one of all…

👉 What happens when I’m no longer there?

"What I Realized".

*There were resources out there.
*There were programs.
*There were conversations.

But something was missing.

👉 A clear path.
👉 Real guidance.
👉 Practical solutions for families.

Especially when it came to housing and independence.

🏡 Why Housing Matters So Much

Housing is not just about having a place to live.

It’s about:

✔ Stability
✔ Safety
✔ Routine
✔ Confidence
✔ Independence

👉 It’s the foundation for everything else.

And yet… it’s one of the biggest gaps families face.

So here is "Why I Chose to Speak Up".

This month, I made a decision:

👉 To stop keeping these conversations private
👉 And start sharing them openly

Because I knew…

If I had these questions, other families did too.

Over the past 30 days, I’ve had conversations with parents who are:

✔ Searching for answers
✔ Feeling overwhelmed
✔ Trying to plan for the future
✔ Wanting better options for their children

And what I’ve seen is this:

👉 You are not alone.
👉 And you care deeply.

We talked about:

*Housing options

*Independence planning

*Safety

*Support systems

*Advocacy

*Real estate opportunities

*Legal and financial protection

But more importantly…

👉 We started a conversation that needs to continue.

Remember, Autism Awareness Is Not Just April

Autism Awareness is not 30 days.

👉 It’s 365 days a year.

Because our children’s lives, futures, and needs…

👉 Don’t pause after April ends.

Here, What Happens Next. This is not the end. This is the beginning.

I will continue:

✔ Sharing resources
✔ Providing guidance
✔ Creating conversations
✔ Building solutions

My Vision Moving Forward. About Autism Housing & Independence, is about more than awareness.

👉 It’s about action.

It’s about helping families:

✔ Plan with confidence
✔ Explore real housing options
✔ Build independence step by step

If you’ve followed this journey…

If something resonated with you…

👉 I want you to know this:

I’m here.

Not just this month.

👉 But moving forward.

Because at the end of the day…

👉 Every individual deserves:

🏡 A home
🧭 A plan
💙 A future

💙 Day 29: Legal & Financial Planning

Protecting Your Child’s Future Beyond Housing

Over the past 28 days, we’ve talked about:
✔ Housing
✔ Independence
✔ Safety
✔ Support systems
✔ Planning for the future

But today, we’re going to talk about something that many families avoid—not because it’s unimportant…

But because it feels complicated.

Why This Matters More Than You Think
If something happens to you…
• Who will make decisions for your child?
• Who will manage finances?
• How will housing be maintained?

These are not easy questions. But they are necessary.

Yes, these are some of the realities many families face.
Without a legal and financial plan:
❗ Benefits can be lost
❗ Assets can be mismanaged
❗ Housing plans can fall apart
❗ Your child may not have the support you intended
Planning protects everything you’ve been building.

Remember, It’s Not Just About the House.

Buying a home is one step. Protecting that home—and your child’s ability to live in it—is another.

This is where legal and financial strategy comes in.

Let’s go over some key areas every family should understand.
🔹 1. Special Needs Trust (SNT)
This is one of the most important tools available.
It allows you to:
• Set aside money for your child
• Protect eligibility for benefits (like Medicaid & SSI)
• Ensure funds are used properly
Without this, your child can be disqualified from support programs.

🔹 2. Guardianship vs. Power of Attorney
As your child becomes an adult, you need to determine:
Who will make decisions?
Options include:
• Full guardianship
• Limited guardianship
• Power of attorney
The right choice depends on your child’s level of independence.

🔹 3. ABLE Accounts
These accounts allow individuals with disabilities to:
✔ Save money
✔ Pay for qualified expenses
✔ Maintain eligibility for certain benefits
A powerful tool for financial independence.

🔹 4. Life Insurance Planning
This is not just about coverage.
It’s about ensuring:
• Long-term care funding
• Housing stability
• Financial continuity

🔹 5. Estate Planning
Your estate plan should include:
✔ A will
✔ Designated trustees
✔ Instructions for care
✔ Housing plans
This ensures your wishes are honored.

Here are some common mistakes families make.
❌ Leaving assets directly to the child
❌ Not setting up a trust
❌ Waiting too long
❌ Not coordinating legal + housing plans
These mistakes can undo everything you’ve built.

Let’s bring it all together: what we’ve covered:
• Housing → Where your child lives
• Independence → How your child lives
• Safety → How your child is protected
• Advocacy → How systems support them

Legal & financial planning = How everything is secured

Planning for your child’s future is not just about helping them today.

It’s about protecting them tomorrow…
even when you’re not there.

You don’t have to do everything at once.

Start here:
1️⃣ Speak with an estate planning attorney
2️⃣ Learn about Special Needs Trusts
3️⃣ Explore ABLE accounts
4️⃣ Identify a trusted decision-maker
5️⃣ Align your housing plan with your legal plan

This is one of the hardest parts of the journey. But avoiding it doesn’t make it easier.

It just delays protection.
If you’ve taken anything from this month, let it be this:
👉 You are not just planning a home…
👉 You are building a protected future

💙 Day 28: The Future Starts Now

This Isn’t Just a Plan… It’s Your Child’s Life
After everything we’ve talked about this month—
housing, independence, safety, planning…

I want to slow this down for a moment.
Because behind all the information, there’s something deeper. This is about your child’s life.

If you’re a parent of a child on the autism spectrum, you’ve probably thought about this… even if you haven’t said it:
*“What is my child’s life going to look like when I’m not there?”
That question is heavy.

And I understand why many families avoid it.

Not because they don’t care…
*But because they care so much

Over the past 27 days, we've talked about a lot:
• Housing options
• Building independence
• Safety planning
• Support systems
• Government programs
• Real estate strategies

But if I’m being honest with you…
None of this matters unless it leads to action.

I’ve spoken to many parents this month.

And one thing I keep hearing is:
•“I’ll figure it out later.”

I get it. Life is busy. This is overwhelming.
But here’s the truth:
•The longer we wait, the fewer options we have.

Not because we did something wrong…
• But because independence takes time to build.

Remember, "Independence Doesn’t Start at 18"

This is one of the biggest misconceptions I see.
Independence is not something that suddenly happens when your child becomes an adult.

It's something we build little by little.
At home. Every day.

This doesn’t mean you need to have everything figured out.
It just means you take one step.

Start Small
Give your child simple responsibilities.
• Putting things away
• Helping with meals
• Following routines
It may not feel like much…
But this is where independence begins.

Look at your home differently. Instead of just a place to live, think of your home as the following:
A space that teaches independence:
• Clear routines
• Predictable environments
• Opportunities to practice skills

Start thinking about the future. You don't need all the answers. But ask yourself:
What kind of life do I want for my child?

Not just where they will live. But how will they live?

Here is what I've learned from talking to families this month. It has been powerful. I've had conversations with parents who are

✔ Worried
✔ Overwhelmed
✔ Trying their best
✔ Looking for guidance

And I want you to hear this clearly:
* You are not behind.
* You are not failing.
*You are doing what you can with what you know.
And now… you’re learning more.

Now, parents and individuals have asked me, "Why do I do this Work?"

This isn’t just about real estate to me.
It’s about helping families create something that feels possible.
A future where your child can:
✔ Feel safe
✔ Feel confident
✔ Have some level of Independence

Even if it looks different from others…
It still matters.

So what Happens Next
If this month has opened your eyes—even a little—
Then the next step is simple:
* Don’t stop here.

That’s why I’m putting together Workshops in May 2026.
Not just to give information…
*But to help you actually start building a plan.

For Parents
We’ll walk through:
• Housing options
• Independence planning
• Real-life strategies you can start using

For Investors
Because the truth is…
*Families need solutions
* And housing is part of that solution

If there’s one thing I want you to take from today, it’s this:
* You don’t need to have everything figured out.
* You just need to start.

Because your child’s future…
* Is being built in the small things you do today.

💙 Day 27: Safety Planning—Autism Awareness Month—April 2026

Building Independence Without Compromising Security

When we talk about independence for individuals on the autism spectrum, one concern always comes up first:

👉 “Will my child be safe?”

And the truth is…

👉 Safety is not separate from independence.
It is part of the plan.

Why Safety Planning Matters

Independence without safety creates risk.

But safety without independence limits growth.

👉 The goal is to balance both.

Safety planning helps your child:

✔ Navigate daily life confidently
✔ Respond to unexpected situations
✔ Build trust in their environment
✔ Reduce anxiety for both child and parent

⚠️ The Reality Families Face

Many families delay independence because of fear:

❗ Wandering or elopement
❗ Difficulty communicating needs
❗ Sensory overload in public spaces
❗ Limited awareness of danger

👉 These concerns are real.

But with the right plan…

👉 They can be managed.
🏡 Safety Starts With the Environment

Your child’s surroundings play a major role in safety.

🔹 At Home

Create a secure and structured space:

✔ Clear layouts (easy navigation)
✔ Safety locks (if needed)
✔ Visual cues and labels
✔ Calm, sensory-friendly areas

👉 A predictable environment reduces risk.

🔹 In the Community

Prepare for real-world situations:

✔ Practice routines (store, park, school)
✔ Use visual schedules
✔ Teach safe boundaries
✔ Identify safe people and places

👉 Repetition builds confidence.

Core Safety Skills to Teach

Safety is a skill—not just a rule.

1️⃣ Communication Skills

* Express needs clearly
* Ask for help
* Use alternative communication tools (if needed)

2️⃣ Awareness of Surroundings

* Recognize safe vs unsafe situations
* Understand basic boundaries
* Follow simple instructions

3️⃣ Emergency Response

* Know what to do in emergencies
* Learn basic contact information
* Practice scenarios (with guidance)

4️⃣ Routine & Predictability

* Daily structure
* Clear expectations
* Consistent environments

👉 Structure reduces confusion and increases safety.

🧭 Safety Planning in Housing

As your child moves toward independence, safety must evolve with them.

🏡 Living at Home

* Supervised independence
* Practice daily routines safely

🏠 ADUs / Two Homes in One

* Independence with proximity
* Immediate support if needed

👥 Shared Housing

* Built-in support system
* Peer accountability

🏥 Supported Living

* Professional assistance
* Structured supervision

🏢 Independent Living

* Requires strong safety skills
* May include remote monitoring or support

⚠️ Common Safety Mistakes

❌ Overprotecting (limits growth)
❌ Avoiding real-world exposure
❌ Not teaching safety skills early
❌ Assuming safety “will come later”

👉 Safety must be taught step by step.

🧭 Step-by-Step Safety Plan

Step 1: Identify Risks

* What situations create concern?
* What triggers stress or confusion?

Step 2: Build Skills Gradually

* Start at home
* Expand to community
* Practice consistently

Step 3: Create a Safe Environment

* Modify spaces
* Use tools and supports
* Reduce unnecessary risks

Step 4: Practice Real-Life Scenarios

* What to do if lost
* How to ask for help
* How to respond to strangers

Step 5: Reassess and Adjust

👉 Safety planning evolves as your child grows

💙 Safety does not mean eliminating all risk.

👉 It means preparing your child to handle life safely.

Because true independence is not:

❌ Being alone without support

👉 It is:

✔ Being prepared
✔ Being aware
✔ Having the right systems in place

✨ You Can Build Both: Safety + Independence

With the right plan:

✔ You reduce fear
✔ You build confidence
✔ You create real opportunities

📅 What’s Next

If you’re feeling unsure about how to:

✔ Create a safe home environment
✔ Build independence step by step
✔ Plan for your child’s future

👉 That’s exactly what we’ll be covering in our May workshops.
