Thanks to generosity of donors throughout our community, King's Daughters Health Foundation has awarded $24,000 in scholarships to local students pursuing college degrees.
The Edna and Mildred Monk Memorial Nursing Scholarship was awarded to five students pursuing degrees in nursing. The $2,000 scholarship provides assistance with the first year's tuition, room, board, books and lab fees and is open to children or grandchildren of current UK King's Daughters team members and volunteers.
This year's scholarship recipients include:
• Savannah Barnes, daughter of Heather Kelley and Jeremy Barnes. A graduate of Rock Hill High School, Savannah plans to attend Ohio University Southern.
• Bailey Daniel, daughter of Jordan and Nikki Daniel. A graduate of Greenup County High School, Bailey plans to attend Ashland Community & Technical College.
• Cooper McClelland, son of Brandon and Kelly McClelland. A graduate of Russell High School, Cooper plans to attend Marshall University.
• Kacee Porter, daughter of Robert and Donella Porter. A graduate of West Carter High School, Kacee plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University.
• Anna Tague, daughter of Brian and Kerry Tague. A graduate of Boyd County High School, Anna plans to attend Morehead State University.
"This scholarship has been funded by the Monk family for many years," said Laura Patrick, King's Daughters Health Foundation director. "We cannot thank Edward Monk and the Monk family enough for their generosity and commitment to nursing's future," she said.
The Boyd County Medical Society awarded $6,000 in scholarships to four students from high schools in Boyd and Greenup counties. Each $1,500 scholarship supports first-year educational expenses and is open to students pursuing any field of study.
This year's scholarship recipients include:
• Alexandra Arnett, daughter of Ryan and Andrea Arnett. A graduate of Russell High School, Alexandra plans to attend Morehead State University.
• Hailey Virgin, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Virgin. A graduate of Boyd County High School, Hailey plans to attend Georgetown College.
• Jayden Snider, son of Jennifer and Candace Snider. A graduate of Greenup County High School, Jayden plans to attend the University of Kentucky.
• Mckenzie Bond, daughter of Amanda McCalvin. A graduate of Boyd County High School, Mckenzie plans to attend Morehead State University.
The Stewart Health Foundation Scholarship was awarded to Braxdon Maye, son of Terri Napier. A graduate of Russell High School (Ky.), Braxdon plans to attend the University of Kentucky. The Stewart scholarship provides assistance with tuition, room, board, books and lab fees and is open to students pursuing a career in healthcare. The scholarship is $8,000 over four years, contingent upon the student meeting ongoing requirements.

Patrick added, “Together, these scholarships reflect a powerful investment in our students and in the future of our region.”
